Dunn, began her career in the Carter White House, first as an intern for White House Communications Director Gerald Rafshoon and then worked for chief of staff Hamilton Jordan. She worked on the campaign of Senator John Glenn (D-OH), and on Capitol Hill before joining the firm founded by Bob Squier and Bill Knapp in 1993. She has been the top adviser to Senator Bill Bradley (D-NJ), including serving as the chief strategist for his presidential campaign, Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN), and former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD). She was hired by then-Senator Barack Obama in 2006 to direct communications and strategy for his political action committee, The Hopefund. This move signaled to many that Obama was nearing a run for the presidency. While advising Hopefund and Obama in 2006, she was instrumental in the preparations for the launch of Obama for America, and brought many key staffers to the Obama campaign with whom she had worked in Bayh or Daschle's offices.

Manufacturing Czar says 'the free market is nonsense'

GLENN: Okay, so what if I told you that Pat, you remember the day that Van Jones left the White House, okay? It was early Sunday morning we found out.

PAT: Yes, it was.

GLENN: And the same about an hour later we found out that the president was appointing somebody to be a new czar.

PAT: Yes, Ron Bloom.

GLENN: Ron Bloom, our manufacturing czar.

PAT: Yes.

GLENN: He is the guy who's going to turn around our manufacturing.

PAT: He was a big union guy.

GLENN: He's a big union guy.

PAT: We were very excited about that.

GLENN: Do you remember when I first heard about that and I started to Google Ron Bloom.

PAT: I do.

GLENN: And I said something's wrong here. Do you remember that?

PAT: I do.

GLENN: Yeah.

PAT: I thought surely not.

GLENN: Surely not.

PAT: Surely, not another one.

GLENN: And after about another hour I figured he had some nefarious ties to some socialist and redistributive wealth kind of organizations.

STU: But that's all theory and

GLENN: Can I tell you something? Yes, and that's why we never went on the air with it because we couldn't nail it down specifically. It was in his youth. And I said at the time, I'm telling you something's wrong. Well, may I?

PAT: Yes, you may.

GLENN: May I now play the audio of our manufacturing czar giving a speech. This is when he was the head of the unions, giving a speech on how the manufacturing sector is just falling apart.

PAT: But this is way I mean, this is such ancient, old history.

GLENN: Politics of the past really.

GLENN: So way back in ought 8.

We know that the whole point is to game the system, to beat the market, or at least find someone who will pay you a lot of money because they're convinced that there is a free lunch. We know this is largely about power, that it's an adults only, no limit game. We kind of agree with Mao that political power comes largely from the barrel of a gun. And we get it that if you want a friend, you should get a dog.

GLENN: Hmmm. I don't have a problem with that. That's just the guy who's restructuring manufacturing in America.

PAT: Can you imagine the jobs he will be creating?

GLENN: Oh, my gosh, of course.

PAT: All Maoists know how to create jobs.

GLENN: Sure. And they don't I mean, anybody who knows that the free market is nonsense, they're going to be able to, they are going to be able to build a great car, I'll tell you that right now. Sure. Especially the kind of car that you buy after somebody puts a barrel of a gun to your head. Those are the kinds of cars that sell, usually. Don't you think?

PAT: Oh, yeah.

GLENN: Yeah.

PAT: Uh huh.

STU: What is his I'm just, I'm sorry. And I know I shouldn't be shaken by this at this point, but this is the

Not only that yet there's another one, but you should be shaken by the fact that no one in the media is are you telling me that Glenn Beck, a guy who's been a deejay his whole life, a guy who doesn't have a degree from any university, doesn't have one, is a normal guy, just a dad, I can be standing some place and hear that Van Jones is out and at the same time Van Jones goes out, Barack Obama gives a speech and appoints Ron Bloom, and Glenn Beck can then look at that and go, wait a minute, I something's not right with that? Really? What is it? My education? Is it my vision? Is that what it is?

PAT: No, it's that you're in bed with the Republican Party. You're just a wing of the

GLENN: That's what it is. So I can do that, but there's no one else in journalism that can do that? There's no one else? Nobody even finds that interesting, that we have a guy who has now been appointed as the manufacturing czar and he doesn't believe in the free market system? Oh, and he pretty much agrees with Mao that power comes from the end in the barrel of a gun. Do you? Do you believe that, that power comes from the barrel of a gun? Do you believe that? I mean, sure, I guess. I guess. Yes, you would claim that, well, I guess so. If you are going to point a gun to my head, you do have a lot of power. But beyond in the, okay, totally evil sort of way, no, I don't agree with that. Do you agree with that, Pat?

PAT: No. In America we've proven over and over and over again that's not the case. Every election we've had that has been so contentious, you know, look at 2000, for instance. There weren't tanks in the street. 2004, 2008, they were all contentious. And there was no there were no barrels of guns.

STU: Because specifically, too, I'm no Maoist, but I am a thinker.

GLENN: Sure.

STU: And isn't the quote political power comes at the barrel of a gun? I don't know that for a fact, but isn't it he's talking specifically about all political power, isn't he?

GLENN: I think that's what Mao said.

PAT: Yeah, I think it might be.

STU: That's what I'm saying.

PAT: I'll have to bone up on my Mao quotes because I'm not up on them.

GLENN: Oh, I have Mao's little red book in my office. Would you like me to get it? Sure.

STU: Because you can certainly make the arguments that global powers are the ones with the biggest weapons. They are certainly for the most part true. I'm proud of it. Thankfully we have them. But you're right. It's

STU: I'm really trying to come up with a separate because there's always, they are always going to come back with something, right? Maybe he's going to say he heard that line from Lee Atwater. Something is coming back here. What is it? Because like he

Glenn Beck's Hotline to Nowhere
The White House has no obligation to correct willful ignorance.

Glenn Beck, the popular Fox News host, has a red telephone on his desk that never seems to ring. Every now and then, in a moment of acute frustration, he will pick it up and give the camera his trademark pleading-puppy look.

What Mr. Beck wants to hear from the phone are answers, and he wants to hear them from the highest authority in the land: the phone, he says, is "a dedicated line right to the White House." And when Mr. Beck gets things wrong, he wants his antagonists on Pennsylvania Avenue to correct him. But "They don't call. They're not going to call."

One of the specific answers Mr. Beck wanted, on one of the days I watched his program last week, had to do with White House Communications Director Anita Dunn, who has been caught on film quoting one of those Mao Zedong aphorisms that wouldn't look out of place on a motivational poster. She also remarked that Mao was one of her "favorite political philosophers," an honor the Chinese Communist shared with Mother Teresa.

Obviously Ms. Dunn was yet another person who deserved to be added to the long list of radicals that Mr. Beck had uncovered within the government.

What's more, no one would call that red phone to reassure Mr. Beck, to tell him that the Obama administration isn't crawling with traitors or to explain why his many nightmare scenarios will not actually come to pass.

"They won't call me," he tells the camera. "Communists, revolutionaries, socialists, Marxists, followers of Chairman Mao appointed by Obama to the executive branch in positions of the government—call, call me. Explain it. Explain it any other way. Call me, right now."

Yet there the mute telephone sits, a quiet symbol of Middle America's frustration. The diabolical liberals in the White House refuse even to acknowledge our queries. "Their silence is their answer," the host sighs.

Is it really? On Monday I wrote to an old friend, Robert McChesney, a professor of communications at the University of Illinois who has been a frequent target of Mr. Beck in recent weeks for his left-wing views and also for co-founding Free Press, an advocacy group on media policy. Did Mr. McChesney get a chance to respond on the red phone or any other way? No. "He never asked me or Free Press to call the red phone," Mr. McChesney wrote me.

Then I emailed Mark Lloyd, the Chief Diversity Officer at the Federal Communications Commission. Mr. Beck has attacked Mr. Lloyd numerous times in recent weeks, repeatedly airing video clips in which he appears to hold noxious views. Did Mr. Lloyd get a chance to call the red phone? "No, no one gave me a phone number to call Beck."

Nor should Mr. Beck require a phone call from the White House to understand that lots of people, including conservatives, have cited Mao and Lenin and other such demonic figures in all sorts of contexts, and that they aren't always careful, when so citing, to point out what bad people these were.

No discerning person would conclude from Ms. Dunn's dimwitted remark that she is a Maoist. That would require more evidence—and that's what makes Mr. Beck's pantomime fear and trembling so odious: He doesn't appear to be interested in further evidence, or really any evidence that doesn't serve his shtick.

Consider a few of the other grand assertions tossed out by the panic-peddling host last week: that the cause of last year's financial crisis was pressure exerted by Acorn and "the people in Washington" on otherwise-reluctant mortgage lenders; that the cause of the inflation of the 1970s was President Jimmy Carter's quest for a "socialist utopia."

These are postulates that it is only possible to believe after you have utterly closed yourself off to conventional ways of knowing, after you have decided that the reporting and analysis and scholarship on these subjects are not worth reading, and that you will choose ideological fairy tales over reality until the day a magical phone call comes from on high.

What Mr. Beck's silent phone really symbolizes is a new kind of ignorance, a coming high-tech dark age in which people can choose to blow off professional standards of inquiry; in which they can wall themselves off with cable TV and friendly Web sites, dismiss what displeases as liberal bias, and demand that any contrary view be transmitted to them via telephone call from the president himself.

Why not let Mr. Beck and his viewers have their fun? Because ideas have consequences. Maybe, as many believe, Glenn Beck is indeed the future of the conservative movement. From tea parties to town-hall meetings, thousands are signing up and fitting themselves out with their very own hotline to nowhere.

Glenn Beck suffered from appendicitis during his radio show Wednesday and had to undergo surgery, a Fox News Channel spokeswoman said.

She said she had no further details.

For Glenn Beck, SEIU Is 'Radical, Marxist,' Except When Its Nurses Treat Him for Emergency Abdominal Pains

Beck described SEIU nurse care as "amazing" after his inflamed appendix was removed.

Earlier today, a hospitalized Glenn Beck tweeted in praise of the "AMAZING drs/nurses" who have cared for him since the emergency removal of his inflamed appendix yesterday afternoon.

The quality of care he is receiving should not have come as a surprise. When Beck complained of acute abdominal pain during his radio program on Wednesday, he was rushed to a nearby hospital. The security-conscious Beck has not disclosed the name of the facility, but it's a safe bet that it is staffed by proud members of a storied union: New York's Local 1199, aka United Healthcare Workers East, which belongs to the Service Employees International Union. The SEIU has organized all of Manhattan's major hospitals, including every facility to which Beck could have conceivably been sent.

It probably has not occurred to Beck to link his kind, efficient nurses to something as dastardly as the SEIU. As recently as Wednesday, he was busy smearing the union with his usual verbal feces. For the past several months, on radio and television, Beck has cast the SEIU, the country's largest union, as a Toxic Avenger-looking bogeyman in his conspiratorial fantasyland. In the progressive plot of Beck's imagination, the "radical, Marxist" SEIU is conspiring with ACORN "thugs" to destroy the freedoms guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and turn this country into North Korea--or worse.

Just hours before his hospitalization, Beck was at work increasing the pitch of his attacks on SEIU and its leaders. On Monday, he warned his Fox News audience that SEIU president Andy Stern is "controlling our country." On Wednesday, he claimed Stern was spouting "communist, Marxist propaganda" by addressing the need for labor to organize globally in a global economy.

It is obvious listening to Beck go after the SEIU that he has only recently encountered the name Andy Stern. Almost certainly the introduction came in the form of talking points spoon-fed to Beck by his friends at the corporate-funded policy shop, Americans for Prosperity. It is also apparent that he knows even less about the labor movement in general. Compared to Beck--who probably knows more about the 80s TV show ALF than he does about the history of the AFL--Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity are Pulitzer-winning labor historians. He clearly has little to no understanding of what unions do, their central role in creating the American middle-class, or why the labor movement has long served a legitimate and important role in national politics.

While he's lying on his back, Beck should take advantage of his illness to begin his self-education. He might ask his "amazing" nurses what they think about their wages and benefits, which are some of the best in the country. He should ask them to talk about the relationship between those wages and their yellow and purple union cards. He might learn that they enjoy some of the highest standards for healthcare jobs in the country, not because of the "free market," but because generations of 1199 members fought for them.

The quality of care Beck is receiving is directly connected to the proud history of New York's Local 1199. To pick just one study out of many, research by the U.S. National Institutes of Health shows that heart attack victims sent to unionized hospitals enjoy higher survival rates over those sent to non-unionized hospitals by between seven and 11 percent.

If Beck wants to put his healthcare where his mouth is, he should demand to be taken to a non-SEIU hospital on the future morning when the inevitable cardiac arrest interrupts The Glenn Beck Program and puts its smug, unsuspecting host in the back of ambulance once again.
