Islamic Speakers Bureau Backed By Radical Profs

A California nonprofit dedicated to "teaching about Islam & Muslims" at U.S. high schools and college campuses features a board of advisors that is stacked with some of the most controversial activist professors in the field of Middle Eastern studies today. The imprimatur of these scholars may signal a troubling shift toward the support of proselytizing efforts and the further unraveling of Middle East Studies in America.


The board of Islamic Networks Group (ING) is a veritable Who's Who of Islamist apologists and activists. Leading the list is John Esposito, the founding director of the Saudi-funded Center for Muslim Christian Understanding at Georgetown University. He famously stated that the suicide-bombing Hamas organization engages in "honey, cheese-making, and home-based clothing manufacture."


Joining Esposito on the ING board is Sherman Jackson of the University of Michigan, who was a trustee at the North American Islamic Trust and worked with the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), both un-indicted co-conspirators in the U.S. v. Holy Land Foundation.


There's also Ingrid Mattson, a convert to Islam, who is a professor at the Hartford Seminary and president of the un-indicted co-conspirator ISNA. While much of her work is controversial, she is famous for a CNN chatroom interview in 2001 in which she stated that the radical Saudi Wahhabi ideology is "a reform movement" that "really was analogous to the European Protestant reformation."


Hamza Yusuf Hanson, who is not a scholar but sits on the ING board, publicly declared his own extremism at an ISNA convention. In 1991, he reportedly delivered a speech titled "Jihad is the Only Way" to the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), which is an arm of the radical organization Jamaat-i-Islami in Pakistan.


While Maha El-Genaidi, the founder, president and CEO of ING, does not appear openly to embrace radicalism, she reportedly has worked with the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), also an un-indicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation case. El-Genaidi also participated in an event sponsored by the Muslim Students Association with Siraj Wahhaj, an un-indicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.


ING's reach is wide. Its web site lists more than a dozen affiliated organizations in North America. They reflect a broad network involved in Islamic outreach (da'wa), otherwise known as proselytizing.


The list of ING affiliates includes such Muslim outreach organizations as: The Islamic Speakers Bureau of Nebraska; the Islamic Resource Group in Minnesota; the Islamic Education and Resource Network in Michigan; the Islamic Center of Cincinnati; the Organization of Islamic Speakers Midwest Illinois; the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Atlanta; the Kentucky Islamic Resource Group; the Islamic Speakers Bureau of San Diego; and the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Vancouver.


Because ING charges nothing for its campus speeches, hosts aren't deterred by financial needs. Thus, with a modest 2007 budget of $356,000, the latest figure available via public tax returns, ING made an astonishing 750 classroom visits in one year, a figure that doesn't include visits to churches, senior centers, corporations, and forums for policemen and healthcare workers. According to a recent ING newsletter, the group reached 14,000 students and adults after public schools and universities responded to a large-scale ING direct mail campaign.


ING also disseminates its message through the printed word. Access to the ING online store is now denied for reasons unknown, but a few of the organization's publications are available on the Internet. Among them is Arab and Muslim Stereotyping in American Popular Culture by Jack Sheehan, a former communications professor at Southern Illinois University who was also a visiting professor at Esposito's Center for Muslim Christian Understanding. Another title is Presenting Ramadan and Eid in Elementary School: Grades K-6 Kit for Parents and Teachers, designed to generate excitement about these Muslim holy days through art, music, and "lunar activities."


ING also appears to have created a curriculum about Islam for grades 7 through 12. It also appears that the State of California, at least at one point, used ING curriculum. However, the ING links on the California Department of Education website are now dead.


There is nothing even vaguely radical on the ING website. The organization's behavior appears to be consistent with its message of pluralism. One might only observe that the organization attempts to whitewash the radical strains of the religion (a common theme in the work of Esposito and Mattson).


Without challenging ING's freedom to preach, two important observations should be made.


First, it is now clear that some Middle Eastern Studies professors have ceased being observers of Islam and are now engaging in its propagation. Countless analysts have noted that Middle Eastern Studies professors substitute scholarship with apologia for radicalism. Still others openly agitate against the United States or Israel. However, it is rare to see scholars openly lend their support to proselytizing efforts of this kind.


It is too early to know whether the scholars on the ING board represent an anomaly or a trend. The motivations of Mattson and Sherman - both converts to Islam - are somewhat understandable. Esposito, a non-Muslim, is more of a mystery.


On a more practical level, elementary school, high school, or college administrators mulling a free visit from El-Genaidi's group should be forewarned about the academic engine that powers ING. ING's leading thinkers have a history of cavorting with apologists for radicalism-and the radicals themselves.

The Campus War Against Israel and the Jews

We have grown accustomed to the bloodlust of the radical Islamic state of Iran, and of its determination, in league with terror organizations such as Hizbollah and Hamas, to annihilate Israel.


What is new is the degree to which the Middle East conflict has been brought home to America by radical professors and student groups who are lining up at universities across the country to join the jihadis in their fight against the Jews.


Earlier this year, as Israel was defending itself from Hamas’ three year campaign of rocket attacks in the Gaza War, “teach-ins” were held on campuses across the country. Their theme was that Israel is a Nazi apartheid state, that Palestinians are the victims of a “holocaust,” and that Hamas terrorists are freedom fighters.


These teach-ins and demonstrations were part of an intensifying war against the Jews that has broken out on many fronts across American higher education:


* University of California Sociology professor William Robinson assembles photos even university administrators conceded were "lurid" showing Nazis committing unspeakable acts against Jews and emails them to all his students along with a diatribe about how the Israeli soldiers fighting Hamas terrorists were no different from fascist troops in World War II destroying the city of Warsaw.



* A sit in by radical leftists and pro-jihadists at the University of Rochester during Israel’s defensive counter attack on Hamas intimidates school administrators into backing a demand for the university to divest from companies doing business with “the Israeli war machine.”



* At UC Irvine, members of the Muslim Student Union attend graduation ceremonies with green sashes emulating those of suicide bombers inscribed with the word shahada (martyr).


At one level the campus war against the Jews is a war of symbols: radical demonstrators carrying banners on which the Star of David is joined to the swastika by an equal sign; student governments and academic senates pushing measures for disinvestment based on the rancid assumption that Israel – the only democratic state in the Middle East -- is morally equivalent to the racist apartheid regime of South Africa; leftist propagandists cynically reversing the Biblical story so that the ideologues of genocide with their massive populations become David and tiny Israel becomes Goliath.



But the Middle East conflict as reflected on American campuses increasingly features the threat of real, in addition to merely rhetorical violence. Radical and pro-jihad groups are increasingly dropping the pretense that only Israel is in their gun sights and not Jews per se. Their approach to Jews who don’t agree with their position on the Middle East is one of hatred and intimidation. In recent pro Palestinian rallies at UC Irvine, for instance, radical Muslim students threatened Jewish students with violence and chased them off campus in a shocking act of hatred that school administrators ignored.



This fall the David Horowitz Freedom Center will launch a nationwide protest whose theme will be “Stop the Campus War Against Israel and the Jews.” Frontpage Magazine will have more to say about this campaign as it develops in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, to show the extent and intensity of this hate movement, we will publish portraits of the top ten individuals and institutions who have made Israel and Jews targets in a vicious campaign of slander and incitement to violence. These are the worst of the worst, hardcore anti Israel and hardcore anti Semitic. --The Editors

Fighting the Campus War Against Israel and the Jews: the Muslim Students Association

The Muslim Students Association of the U.S. and Canada (MSA) has chapters at nearly 600 colleges and universities across North America. Treated by administrators and student governments alike as a respectable political organization, the MSA has, over the past few years, sponsored a series of vile expressions of Jew-hatred in a variety of campus and non-campus venues. A few examples serve to illustrate the content of the MSA’s character:


In October 2000, the president of UCLA’s MSA led a crowd of demonstrators at the Israeli consulate in chants of "Death to Israel!" and "Death to the Jews!"


At UCLA's annual "Anti-Zionist Week" festivities, rank-and-file MSA members have raised money for Hamas and Hezbollah terrorists, who are solemnly sworn to the mass murder of Jews and the annihilation of Israel.


At its Annual Conference in 2003, the Iowa MSA invited, as a guest speaker, CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad -- on record as a proud "supporter of the Hamas movement."


Alkalima, the newspaper of UC Irvine’s Muslim Student Union (an MSA campus affiliate), once published a special report called "Zionism: The Forgotten Apartheid," which glorified Hamas and Hezbollah as noble warriors fighting Israeli oppression.

At the 7th annual MSA West Conference held at the University of Southern California in January 2005, former MSA member Ahmed Shama praised Hamas and Hezbollah for being "uncompromising" on their principles, and for refusing to "shake hands with the other side."

MSA’s Muhammad al-Asi is a frequent guest speaker on university campuses; his hatred of Israel is his trademark theme. In an article titled “The Qur'an Says Zionist Israel Will Be Shattered,” al-Asi wrote: “The prophet of Allah ... summed it up when he said: ‘The final hour shall not commence until the Muslims engage Yahud [Jew] in warfare. And the Muslims will deal the deathblow to Yahud. These Yahud will hide behind timber and boulder that will call out on Muslims: O Muslim there is a Yahudi in disguise, come and annihilate him.’”
Appearing as a guest speaker at UC Irvine, al-Asi stated: "We have a psychosis in the Jewish community that is unable to co-exist equally and brotherly [sic] with other human beings. You can take a Jew out of the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out of the Jew, and this has been demonstrated time and time again in Occupied Palestine."

Amir-Abdel Malik-Ali, formerly a community activist and currently an Oakland, California-based Imam, is a frequent guest lecturer at MSA events. A passionate supporter of Hamas and Hezbollah, he endorses suicide bombings as a legitimate "resistance" tactic: "Palestinian mothers are supporting their children who are suicide bombers, saying, 'Go honey, go!' That ain't suicide; that's martyrdom."

In a May 2006 appearance at UC Irvine, Malik-Ali accused the "apartheid State of Israel" of carrying out a "holocaust" and a "genocide" against the Palestinian people. Referring to Jews as "new Nazis" and "a bunch of straight-up punks," he told Jews directly: "The truth of the matter is your days are numbered. We will fight you. We will fight you until we are either martyred or until we are victorious."


Imam Abdul Alim Musa, founder and director of the As-Sabiqun movement (which seeks to recreate an Islamic caliphate), is another frequent speaker at MSA events. During a May 9, 2007 "Islamic Revival" at UC Irvine, Musa said: "Who ran the slave trade … who funded [it]? You'll study and you will find out: the Jews … It was the Jewish bankers … in Vienna, with pockets full of money, funding and insuring, that's who did it." In June 2007, Musa held the U.S. and Israel jointly culpable for both attacks on the World Trade Center (in 1993 and 2001).


The racist anti-Semitism that rolls off the tongues of each of the foregoing speakers is also the defining feature of the organization that has anointed them as its leading mouthpieces. Established in January 1963 at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the MSA is the most well-known and influential Islamic student organization in North America. Neither its benign-sounding name nor its professed objective -– “to serve the best interest of Islam and Muslims in the United States and Canada” -- betray any hint of its repugnant ideology or its radical Islamic roots.


MSA was founded by members of the Muslim Brotherhood, godfather organization to Hamas and al Qaeda. In fact, MSA (according to documents confiscated by the FBI) was named explicitly in a May 1991 Muslim Brotherhood memorandum as one of the Brotherhood's likeminded "organizations of our friends" who shared the common goal of destroying America and turning it into a Muslim nation. These "friends" were described by the Brotherhood as groups that could help teach Muslims "that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and 'sabotaging' its miserable house by their hands ... so that ... God's religion [Islam] is made victorious over all other religions."


In its earliest days, MSA was financed largely by Saudi Arabia. In return, the organization promoted the kingdom's extremist Wahhabi strain of Islam. According to author and Islam expert Stephen Schwartz, MSA is a key lobbying organization for Wahhabism. Wahhabi textbooks do not recognize Israel as a sovereign state and do not show it, by name, on any map. Instead, all maps bear the name “Palestine.”


From its inception, MSA had close links with the extremist Muslim World League, whose chapters' websites have featured Osama bin Laden's propaganda.

MSA formerly solicited donations for the now-defunct Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, whose assets the U.S. government seized in December 2001 because that organization was giving financial support to the genocidal barbarians of Hamas.

MSA also has strong ties to the World Assembly of Muslim Youth, which serves as a vehicle through which the Saudi government funds Islamic extremism and international terrorism. WAMY was co-founded by a former senior member of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and by Osama bin Laden’s nephew. Moreover, WAMY raises funds for Hamas. A Saudi opposition group reports that WAMY disseminates literature encouraging "religious hatred and violence against Jews, Christians, Shi'a and Ashaari Muslims." As WAMY puts it, this literature is expressly designed "to teach our children to love taking revenge on the Jews and the oppressors, and teach them that our youngsters will liberate Palestine and Jerusalem when they go back to Islam and make jihad for the sake of Allah."


A number of noxious organizations have splintered off from MSA, including: the Muslim Arab Youth Association (a now-defunct group that sponsored conferences featuring known Islamic terrorists as guest speakers); the Islamic Circle of North America (currently under investigation by U.S. authorities for possible connections to Islamic terrorist groups); and the Islamic Society of North America (created by MSA with the help of Sami Al-Arian, former North American leader of Palestinian Islamic Jihad).


The MSA uses the current obsession with “diversity” in American higher education as a form of protective coloration to conceal its goals. Not all of the MSA’s rank-and-file members are aware of the organization’s roots as an anti-Semitic hate organization. Some, in fact, are under the impression that they have simply joined a fraternity of sorts, dedicated to cultivating friendships, promoting outreach, and fostering interfaith understanding on campus. And indeed, not all MSA campus chapters are equally radical. But the national MSA, which serves as the umbrella group for the various campus MSAs, is a veritable training ground for those shock troops who spearhead the campus war against Israel and the Jews.

Second Graders Sing About Allah?

A battle over religion is brewing in central Indiana after a public school wanted second graders to sing a song declaring, “Allah is God.” The phrase was removed just before the performance after a national conservative group launched a protest.

The principal of Lantern Road Elementary School in Fishers, IN, said they were trying to teach inclusiveness through their holiday production. It included references to Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan, Las Posadas and Kwanzaa. However, no other deity, other than Allah, was referenced in the show.

“It went off…without a hitch,” Danielle Thompson told the Indianapolis Star. “Several families thought it was a nice program.”

But others did not – especially David Hogan. His daughter came home with a copy of the lyrics just days before the production. Hogan, a Christian, told the American Family Association, a conservative advocacy group, that he was deeply concerned to learn that his daughter had been singing, “Allah is God.”

Here’s what the children were assigned to sing:

“Allah is God, we recall at dawn,
Praying ‘til night during Ramadan
At this joyful time we pray happiness for you,
Allah be with you all your life through.”

But when it came time to perform the “Christian” part of Christmas, children were assigned to say:

“I didn’t know there was a little boy at the manger. What child is this?
I’m not sure if there was a little boy or not.
Then why did you paint one on your nativity window?
I just thought if there was a little boy, I’d like to know exactly what he (sic) say.

Micah Clark, executive director of the Indiana AFA, launched an Internet protest once he heard about the allegations. “What surprised me here is that we’ve had a secular scrubbing of Christmas for so long and the school apparently didn’t see the problem with kids singing to Allah,” he told FOX News Radio. “You won’t even mention Jesus and you’re going to force my child to sing about Allah?

In email correspondence the school initially defended the reference as a way to be inclusive of all religions. However, once complaints starting rolling in, school leaders decided to eliminate the Allah reference.

That drew the ire of the Muslim Alliance of Indiana. “It’s unfortunate if that was removed from the program just because of Islamophobic feelings,” Shariq Siddiqui told the Indianapolis Star. “Schools are a place where we should learn more about each other rather than exclude each other based on stereotypes and misconceptions.”

But Clark said having children bow and pray is problematic for non-Muslim families. “(This show) affirmed Islam and negated Christianity. I wouldn’t have had a problem if it had been equal to all faiths.”

At least one Christian family approved of the Allah reference. “I’m a Christian and I was in no way offended by the program at Lantern Road,” said Judy Grasso to The Star.

The War Against the Jews at UC San Diego

[Editor’s note: This speech was delivered at the University of California, San Diego on May 10, 2010 and has been edited for publication.]

The last time I visited this campus was 40 years ago when I came to have lunch with Professor Herbert Marcuse, a malicious Marxist who made a reputation for himself and became a hero to the left by advancing the proposition that if you can claim to speak on behalf of the oppressed you have the right and the obligation to silence, and, if necessary, to obliterate people who disagree with you. This, of course, is the creed of every run-of-the-mill dictator on earth, and it is the creed of the progressive left today.

It is appropriate — and not coincidental of course — that I arrive here during “Israel Apartheid Week” or, as I prefer to call it, “Hitler Youth Week.” I use that reference because — as should be evident — what is going on here is part of a globally organized movement centered in the Arab Muslim Middle East to finish the job that Hitler started. Unlike the Nazis, who hid their “final solution” from ordinary Germans and the world at large, the Muslim radicals shout it from the rooftops, put it in their organizational charters and get applauded for doing so by millions of Muslims who want to see it happen. And the left does its job, as during the Cold War years, of conducting auxiliary campaigns to help the genocide along.

Along with Israel Apartheid Week, these leftists will commemorate what the genocide-minded call the “Nakba,” which is Arabic for “catastrophe” and is the name they have given to the creation of the only Jewish state in existence. The protests are genocidal intentions in themselves, seeking the obliteration of a people’s homeland; and they are supported by this university which prides itself on its diversity and respect for others – apparently excepting Jews. The “Israel Apartheid Wall,” which is the centerpiece of this genocidal week at UC San Diego, was created with $8,500 in student funds. Another $32,000 in student funds went to the sponsoring organization, the Muslim Students Association, for the hate speakers it brought in and other activities this spring. The hate week itself is supported by several university departments, including Ethnic Studies, Visual Arts and Literature, and by one of the colleges of the university, as it happens Thurgood Marshall College, named for a civil rights activist.

It is also fitting that one of the speakers should be Angela Davis, an academic icon and a lifelong Communist who devoted herself to furthering the agendas of the most oppressive, blood-soaked regime in recorded history; and received for her services a Lenin Prize from the East German police state, the most wretched and ruthless of all the Soviet satellite regimes; who bought an arsenal of weapons for a young Black Panther, who attempted to take a judge and his courtroom hostage, blew off the head of the judge and got himself killed in the process.

Today Angela Davis comes as the leader of a 20-year campaign to end what she calls the “Prison-Industrial Complex.” This is a racist campaign to free every incarcerated criminal in the United States who happens to be of a darker skin tone. Her movement is actually doubly racist. First, because it singles out black and Hispanic criminals for “liberation,” and second, because ninety-five percent of their crimes are committed against law-abiding black and Hispanic people. Angela Davis is a “University Professor,” which means that she makes a six-figure income, is provided with a personal staff and is honored in a way that only a select few of University of California faculty are. A revered figure among the academic left, she makes scores of appearances every academic year and receiving $10,000 honoraria an appearance to spread her hatred of white people, of Jews, and of America to college audiences. This evening we have been thrust into a very sad situation.

Ecclesiastes famously said, “There is nothing new under the sun,” and the older I get, the more impressed I am by this observation. My own parents were card-carrying members of the American Communist Party, which meant that they were pawns, witting and unwitting, of the Soviet empire. They called themselves progressives and believed they had joined a movement to bring social justice to all mankind. In 1956, the leader of world Communism gave a secret speech about the crimes that Stalin had committed in the name of social justice, which included the murders of millions of people, including millions of Communists. He gave the speech because the post-Stalin leaders of the Soviet Union were afraid a new Stalin would emerge and slaughter them too. Like today’s leftists, my parents hated the anti-Communists on the political right and called them liars when they confronted progressives with the crimes their hero had committed. The anti-Communists claimed that Stalin had killed 10 million people. In fact, when the truth was revealed, the figure was 40 million. That’s interesting in itself: The right understates the truth, and the left overstates the lies, in the name of social justice.

Truthful Girl Sinks Deeper

Ever since she affirmed, with clarity and conviction, that she supports Hezbollah’s candid desire to herd all the world’s Jews into Israel so as to ultimately make their mass extermination easier to carry out, Muslim Students Association member Jumanah Imad Albahri has quickly devolved into what can only be described as a pathetic figure.

While the UC San Diego student now whimpers that she is a victim of “alienation” and “marginalization” – note how well-versed she is in the lexicon of victimology – it has become increasingly obvious that her chief affliction is a profound lack of common sense. This deficiency is made plain by the fact that after Albahri gave her recent thumbs-up to genocide, she did not deem it prudent to keep a low profile for awhile – in order to give the foul stench of her bigotry a bit of time to dissipate. Instead, she has persisted in publicly spouting further stupidities, the latest of which brands David Horowitz, who first exposed her unmistakable Jew-hatred at an “Israel Apartheid Week” event earlier this month, as a racist. To “prove” the veracity of her smear, Albahri cites Horowitz’s supposedly objectionable 1999 article titled “Guns Don’t Kill Black People, Other Blacks Do.” So offensive was that piece, claims Albahri, that Horowitz “needs to apologize” for having written it. Really?

Horowitz’s article centered around an NAACP plan to file a class action lawsuit against firearm manufacturers because gun violence was snuffing out the lives of young black men in grossly disproportionate numbers. “Firearm homicide has been the leading cause of death among young African-American males for nearly 30 years,” an NAACP press release lamented at the time. Ostensibly to help remedy this problem, the lawsuit aimed to “force” gun makers “to distribute their product” more “responsibly.” The implication was that if only the gun industry would be more concerned about the rivers of blood flowing through black communities, and less preoccupied with the rivers of cash pouring into its coffers, this crisis would either diminish substantially or disappear entirely.

Horowitz rightly pointed out that the NAACP, by focusing on the alleged transgressions of gun manufacturers, was misdiagnosing the cause of the violence that was decimating the black community. He pointed out, for instance, that 90 percent of all gun-related killings of African Americans were perpetrated by other blacks, and that blacks (who constituted 12 percent of the U.S. population) committed 54 percent of all homicides. Was Horowitz, as Albahri implies in her denunciation of the article, simply engaged in an effort to demean blacks by citing these very sobering facts? No. His point was to bring attention on the real cause of the violent epidemic that was afflicting young blacks; without such an honest appraisal, any prescribed “solutions” – such as suing gun manufacturers – would inevitably be misguided and ineffective, perhaps even counterproductive.

Thus, to shed light on the key issue, Horowitz pointed out that seven of every ten black babies in the United States were being born into homes where there were no fathers – a fact that condemned them, statistically, to alarmingly high probabilities of living in poverty and eventually spending time in prison. Harvard Professor Stephan Thernstrom, for instance, reports that the poverty rate for black children living in single-parent homes is nearly five times greater than for those living in married-couple families. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median income of fatherless black families is scarcely one-third as high as for two-parent black families. Unwed mothers, regardless of their race, are four times more likely to live in poverty than the average American. And 85 percent of all black children in poverty live in single-parent, mother-child homes.

The more we study the numbers, the more they boggle the mind. Regardless of race, children raised without fathers comprise an astonishing 70 percent of our nation’s long-term prison inmates, 70 percent of all young people in state reform institutions, 60 percent of rapists, and 72 percent of adolescent murderers. Regardless of race, each year a boy spends without a father increases his likelihood of future incarceration by about 5 percent. And regardless of race, children from fatherless homes are characterized by much higher-than-average rates of academic failure, placement in special-education classes, behavioral disorders, drug abuse, and such psychiatric problems as depression and anxiety. In other words, growing up without a father is a far better forecaster of a boy’s future criminality than either race or poverty.

Even if all the gun makers in America were unrepentant, bloodthirsty bigots intent on disseminating weapons of death throughout every street and alley of every black neighborhood in the country, they could not harm African Americans nearly as much as the demise of two-parent families has devastated them already. David Horowitz, in his article, was simply pointing out this vital truth – and noting that the NAACP’s energies and resources would have been better spent addressing that issue, rather than on demonizing gun manufacturers for a crisis they did not create. If Miss Albahri is unable to understand this, that’s too bad. Mr. Horowitz communicated the message quite clearly. It’s not his job to comprehend it for her.

Major Development on the Textbook Front!
ACT! for America’s Sarasota Chapter
Achieves a First in Florida State History!

There is something historic going on in Florida. A group of concerned parents, grandparents and citizens have questioned the apparent bias in a world history textbook against Western Civilization. They were initially rebuffed before a local staff committee and have been granted an appeal before the entire Sarasota County School Board regarding the textbook in question! This is the first time in Florida State history that such an appeal has been granted!

The textbook that has raised the ire of local concerned citizens in Sarasota County is titled World History: Patterns of Interaction, published by McDougal Littell (now currently published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt). This textbook is currently on the Florida approved list of instructional materials.

Most, if not all, of the 67 county school districts in Florida use this same world history textbook. The textbook is fatally flawed, historically inaccurate and may violate the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution according to a comprehensive study of the textbook done by Dr. Terri K. Wonder (Click Here to read the study).

This textbook has an anti-Western, anti-capitalist, anti-Christian, anti-Jewish bias. Conversely it promotes Eastern and Middle Eastern Cultures, promotes Islam as a religion, promotes socialism and fails to address world history in a historically accurate manner.

Sarasota County ACT! for America Chapter Leader, Dr. Rich Swier, has approached the local School Board and asked that World History: Patterns of Interaction be removed from the district approved list of instructional materials. His work has lead to a historic event - the Sarasota County School Board will hear an appeal to the Superintendent of the Sarasota County School District's decision to deny Dr.Swier's complaint.

So how can you help to turn back the anti-Western civilization and creeping Sharia contained in this Florida textbook?

Here are five steps to make a real difference in YOUR local school district:

Find out if your local school district is using World History: Patterns of Interaction. If so, go to Step 2.

File a formal complaint with the School District Superintendent (not at the school level) using the study done by Dr. Terri K. Wonder as the basis of your complaint and request this textbook be removed from the District's approved list of instructional materials. Attach the study by Dr. Wonder to the complaint as the evidence for removal of the textbook.

When the Superintendent appoints a Review Committee to address your complaint, be there to listen to the discussion, take notes, and make sure the process is fair and panel is qualified and unbiased.

If the Review Committee recommends to the Superintendent to remove the textbook and the Superintendent accepts that recommendation - Declare Victory. However, most likely they will not. If the Superintendent totally denies your complain, go to Step 5.

Never before has a Florida School Board directly heard an appeal to a textbook challenge. That all changed in Sarasota County on June 14, 2010. The Sarasota County School Board was forced into the position to establish an appeals process when Dr. Swier's complaint was denied by the Superintendent. The Board, upon deliberation and advice from their attorney, decided to use a quasi-judicial appellate process to address the appeal. This appeal option is in local school board policy, make sure there is an appeal in your local school board policy, if not they should have one.

In the state of Florida, if this appeal is denied by the local school board, there is a process in place to appeal to the Florida State Commissioner of Education. We will pursue this direction if necessary. There is a state textbook review scheduled for Florida next year. Any cloud of doubt raised through this appeal will really help during next year’s review!

Now is the time to find out if your school district is using World History: Patterns of Interaction and time for you to take a stand to stop the anti-Western bias and creeping Sharia in our children's public school textbooks!

If you live in the Sarasota area, the appeal will be heard by the school board on Tuesday, July 20th at the regularly scheduled late afternoon meeting. Each side in this appeal, the District and Rich Swier, will be given ten minutes to present their case with a five minute rebuttal by each side.

The public may comment. Three minutes is allotted to each person speaking. Please consider being there to make your voice heard!
