ok, so i'm looking to git a nice shiny 24" Dell widescreen monitor...

trouble is, it's 16ms response time and i'm an FPSer and i'm worried about ghosting...

anyone know anything about this???

The lower the score, the better.

I picked up a ViewSonic 22" LCD widescreen at CostCo for $250 in April. It rates a 5ms and I have absolutely no ghosting.

There's an article here from Toms Hardware: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/03/08/four-wide-screen-19-monitors-compared/

They are saying that there is a great deal of deviance from the manufacturer specs on some monitors.

cheers ken

btw, i already got a viewsonic vx924 which is a 19" 4:3 aspect 4ms panel...

...but i want something larger and wide screen...i read somewhere that 24" and above use a different pael type and are better, but i've seen lots of recommendations for lower sized monitors...just need to know if 16ms is no good for FPS games...and/or any recommendations...

THG yeah i visit there every day...:)

(nowadays in spite of the bad makeover...)

16ms is on the outer edge of what I'd put up with for video games. At EA, my monitors were 16ms and it was satisfactory most of the time, though I found Battlefield 2142 was a bit hard on it. Of course, they were Dell monitors and might have been slower than rated.

What games are you playing?

hmm, yeah, i've been thinking that 16ms is just too much...

btw, i only played a few games of 2142, i thought it was a waste of time...we could have had BF3 by now.

What games are you playing?
essentially in a BF'er...played so many versions of that game, from original wake island demo to the latest BFBC vid, here (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2t92d_bad-company-gc-gameplay_videogames)...incidentally this vid is so new, it doesn't exist anywhere on the net, yet, apparently...

it MAY, but i fucking dam well hope not, be a console only version...a kind of BF3...for 2 years of BF2, you'd think something would be on the horizon...?

watch it and note the trees being felled by automatic fire, the cool explosions and the return of the binos...(call in arty etc)...

so basically FPS's...i got 1200 hours of BF2 under my belt (1st leutenant rank) and i've tried the lostplanet demo but that was really hadr on my system...but i also play some RTS games, i was up until 5am last night trying out the new settlers demo...here (http://clanservers.multiplay.co.uk/?p=/ftpfiles.php%3Ffid%3D17540), which is not bad, but a bit twee...tech-wise it didn't seem much better than stronghold.

i also, at one time, got right into the codemasters game, soliders...even building my own mod...went thru the C&C thing, red alert i played to death...but those don't really need low response from screen like FPS's do...

also i still play certain missions from COD2, like the brit crossroads mission and the american crossing the rhine, on the hardest setting, they are tough as hell.

i trieds the bioshock demo, a few days ago, but i thought it sucked, too much IGV and not enough gameplay...the engine looks alright, it's just a weirdo game...try it and see if you think i'm right?

bbbut, the future, what does the future hold, welll...

the are 3 massive games on the horizon:

Crysis (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/23077.html) - basically farcry2, even with the very gay biosuit that makes you run faster or be stronger...
COD4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-1hW-tfthY) - vids of which look incredible...
GTA4 (http://www.rockstargames.com/IV/trailer_splash.html) - in the ALWAYS playable GTA series looks incredible also...

yeah COD1 was game of the year when it was released, 2004 was it?

COD2 was excellent, i still play selected missions on that, to this day.

check this (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/21749.html) out, makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, can't wait to get my hands on this baby!

(you might be able to d/l it and get bigger res, i've got a 115mb version of this)

Damn that video was tight.

I'm downloading the demo of World in Conflict now. Here's a vid (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/23745.html).

I rarely download demos..but this got my attention, even though I've been let down mostly when it comes to these type of games.

hmm, not bad, but i prefer genuine gameplay vids rather than these produced thingys...

that geezer looks a bit like rob riggle from the DS...?!

hey demos rock...seriously...

try everything, that's my motto...last two nights i've been up to 5am playing the new settlers demo...not much better than stronghold from what i can tell, but not bad and that's saying something...

just make sure you like the game before spending on the full game, imo...

btw, i think the far cry demo was possibly the best demo ever...

anyway, i found the download page:

still need an answer to my monitor question tho!

The problem is the other factors involved as well. 16ms is on the edge of what is acceptable, but since manufacturers don't seem to care much about accuracy on refresh rate, it could be much higher.

I'd look for something lower. Usually when I'm looking for something like this (and again, I'm extremely happy with the ViewSonic 22") I check out the user reviews on NewEgg.

Mine is the ViewSonic VX2235wm, widescreen.
It's $250 at CostCo and $299 everywhere. THey make one with an iPod dock as well which runs a little more (or the same depending on the sale of the moment.)

I did see a 32" HD LCD for $699 yesterday. Probably cheaper elsewhere, but it was beautiful. First I need to build a new PC though. Mine is starting to chug too much.

wow...that's cool.

i just spotted a LG 22" wide screen 2ms panel for £208 in vat (tax)...

here (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?LG-L226WT).

don't like silver, tho...light bleed reflection interferes with the picture...prefer black framing...sure it's a good panel tho...

Hyundai aims to be the "best visual IA company" through the basis of display, digital information products, and digital electronics products. As a recognized global leader, Hyundai continues to exemplify the driving force for growth as an honest and beloved people-oriented corporation. (http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/tft-monitor/hyundai-n220wd/)

Yes, I'll admit, customer opinions are usually my bet for buying computer parts. If there are too few reviews or too conflicting, then I'll search for reviews from Tom's or elsewhere. I'm still hungering for a new video card...this integrated mobo video is making me sad. Maybe I'll ask the wife for a new one for Christmas.

I found a similar model over at Newegg..so the reviews might not be on key.

I haven't even really considered upgrading my display. LCD prices have dropped over the last couple of years, so I doubt I go CRT again.

ok vid card., i'd recommend the cheaper 8800GTS...you get most of the performance of the GTS/Ultra with practically half the price...

there are some new things on the horizon (when is that not the case?!) and i could not recommend buying the top of the range of the 8800's until these newer cards come out, which will obviously make the big guns prices drop...

i've come into a bit of money so am gonna upgrade my pc...so all this is fresh in my mind, right now...also hence the monitor researching...

seen this rather nice asus monitor (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?asu-mm221&P=4) and this rather nice hp one (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF06a/20491-314293-314303-314303-314303-13117194.html)...i think the HP is prob the nicest looking 22" wide screen i've seen, but i'm leaning towards the asus right now. i know they don't have much exp in the monitor field, but they do a lot of stuff and they wouldn't do this if it wasn't good...

...and anyway, in the UK we get a 7 day grace period when we can send anything back we don't like for no reason. so i may take a punt on the asus and if i don't like it try something else!

yeah that's pretty much the same monitor...

what i'd really like is a 24", but these monitors are usually 1900x1200 and without jumping straight to SLI i don't think what i've got could power it...

soooo, i'm gonna jump to 22" wide screen for now (1680x1050)...then maybe 1 year go for the biggy...anyway, these 22" wide screen monitors only are about £200 right now...

guess i'll just have to spend 7 days playing computer games to test it properly! ;)

you can save which is weird for a demo RTS...i like the lee enery style barking, that made me laugh...so much radio traffic...adds ot the tension...

i just failed...i wanted to get the morters behind the town, but didn't get back in time and they took the town square...when i play this a fewmore times, i'll try it on hard...;)

curious...using ruskies as the enemy, that's either backward or forward looking?!

i would have said a campaign against hordes of taliban would be more correct, that would be cool...overheating .50 cals!

don't remember that one...

i thought it had a "real war" feel to it, the simon&schuster title...i played that a lot it was very playable...

but i like this, it's very accesible and with no base building and resource gathering/accumulating...you get straight into the action...

it's got MP built into the demo, i'm gonna have to try and proper net game next, see what that's like...if it's good i might actually buy it...tho i've still yet to get some proper gaming out of my medieval2  (another gg)...

roll on COD4, that's what i'm looking forward too...;)
