I am shopping for an mp3 player, is the ipod just a status symbol?

Everyone is ipod..ipod..blah blah blah, but I looked at a Phillips Siren..twice the song capacity, etc. Any feed back from the peanut gallery would be appreciated. Also I want to hook it up to my rig's stereo system, is the ipod the only mp3 with all the bullshit attachments? Going on a 15 state journey soon...Any and all advice would be very much appreciated!!

I always found that Dell MP3 players have the best bang for the buck.

iPods are inflated in price.
