dumb q, but i'm pretty computer ignorant. how do i get stuff off of my start up, so it doesn't take so long for the computer to boot up? i have things like aim, and a bunch of other garbage that i don't use regularly that is in my tool bar. thanks.

On your start menu

select Help and Support

under Pick a Task

select Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems

from the menu on the left select System Configuration Utility

open System Configuration Utility

select Startup tab

de-select the items you don't want to startup when you boot your computer.

Or bring up the Run command (Windows key + R) and type msconfig in the window. That'll get you to the same place.

Hey nutsak,

Thanks. I was going there until I realized my laptop doesn't have a windows key.

Is there a shortcut to bring up the functions of the windows key?

Hiya. :)

I don't know, I'll have to check into it. Are you sure it's not there? A lot of laptops move them around due to space (that damn touchpad messes up their geography).

Unless the computer administrator disabled it, you can get to the run command via the start button too.

I don't have a touch pad either. LOL

It's an IBM Thinkpad that I have just started using. I'm still getting used to where things are.

I'm not having any luck finding "replacement" keystrokes for that key. Did you check in the computer's help file to see if they have an alternate key mapping for it? On some laptops that don't have 104 keys, they have an "F" key or something like it that toggles several keys to perform dual functions (it's usually the "F" keys (F1, F2, F3, etc.).

I expect the Function key will get me there, just have to play with it a bit.

Thanks!

windows r

regedit

navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

...and delete what you don't want...

better still, add this key to your regedit favourites...for future reference..

thanks. knowing me, i'll delete stuff from the registry that won't allow me to argue with you anymore. lol

Back up your registry before you do anything. Every action you take in there takes effect immediately and is irreversible - it's immediately saved to disk.

;)

it's not that hard...

actually i hate the way software companies pollute your registry...

fucking office "quick launch", "taskbar this", "quick start that"...

gets on my tits...

i have about 5 items in my reg run key...AV, firewall, an instance of task manager and my nvidia auto overclocking app...

AV is the most important...

always, always, always allow anti-virus to run on startup...and your firewall, if you don't use inbuilt windows one...i use zone alarm which is so nazi, it's actually a bit of a pain, to get settled...but in today's climate, that's good...
