Bio-technology for alleviation of human suffering: Kalam

Ahmedabad, April. 28 (PTI): Research in the field of bio-technology will contribute towards advancement of human knowledge and alleviation of human suffering, President A P J Abdul Kalam said here today.

Delivering a lecture after inaugurating Indian Institute of Advance Research (IIAR) at Koba in Gandhinagar district, Kalam said the institute will contribute towards growth of the state as well as the nation.

Kalam said in two to three years, the minimum critical mass of the institute should be 100 scientists conducting research on different subjects. "I hope the institute would achieve this target," he said.

He said convergence of bio, info and nano technology will provide solutions to critical health problems. "Nano technology is knocking at our doors and we should use it for the advantage of our people," Kalam added.

The President called upon scientists to work on anti HIV vaccine. He also asked them to work for production of combination vaccine that can cure two or three diseases.

He said the institution should also focus on the bio-informatics by convergence of information technology plus communication technology.

JOINT STATEMENT BETWEEN MALAYSIA AND JAMAICA

The two Prime Ministers also agreed to expand exchanges and cooperation in the fields of education, information and communications technology, public health, bio-technology and agriculture. On cooperation in education, they agreed to expedite the conclusion of a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Education. In the field of agriculture, they agreed that Jamaica could benefit from collaboration with Malaysia in the area of coconut growing, specifically in relation to combating the lethal yellowing disease of the coconut trees. Malaysia took note of Jamaica's request for the supply of seedlings for its coconut replanting and rehabilitation programme. Jamaica also expressed interest in receiving technical assistance in the cultivation of palm oil to be used in the development of an edible oil agro-processing plant.
