Al-Zawahiri Encourages Targeting of Gulf Oil...

Along with the "Impediments to Jihad" audiotape, the al-Sahab Media Productions company produced on September 19 a 43-minute video featuring a meeting with Ayman al-Zawahiri, five minutes of which was broadcast on that day by the Arab television network al-Jazeera. On December 7, al-Jazeera re-ran other extracts from the same interview, this time including instructions by al-Zawahiri to attack oil installations. The interview has since been re-posted on the jihadi forums, including al-Safinat http://202.71.102.108/~alsafnat/vb/ ).

In the interview, al-Zawahiri invited the mujahideen "to focus their attacks on the oil wells stolen from the Muslims, because most of the revenues of this oil go to the enemies of Islam." He elaborated that the latter were exploiting oil with "incomparable greed, and we have to stop that theft with all we can to save this fortune for the nation of Islam." Due to some confusion as to whether the comments were part of a new interview there was a flurry of interest from analysts. In Kuwait security was stepped up around oil facilities, vital installations and diplomatic missions, mindful not only of the threat but also of the upcoming December 12 OPEC meeting to be held in the country.

Yet, in reality the call to target oil facilities goes back some time. While bin Laden originally counseled against targeting these facilities on the grounds that they constituted a fundamental resource for the Umma, al-Qaeda soon elaborated a new "bleed-until-bankruptcy" strategy against the United States, as the prime backers of the Gulf regimes. Strategy analyses, such as Abu Musab al-Najdi's "Al-Qaeda's Battle is an Economic Battle and Not Military," written on October 3, highlighted the role of targeting oil in the future struggle, as part of waging economic attrition against the enemy. Given that the mujahideen have successfully "prevented the Americans from gaining control of large quantities of Iraqi oil to plug the gap caused by the September 11 attacks," the author concludes that, on the bases of its statements and operations to date, "al-Qaeda will concentrate its efforts on oil targets in one of these three states—Kuwait, Venezuela and so-called ‘Saudi' Arabia" and continue its campaign to "prevent the American thieves from benefiting from Iraqi oil" (text posted on October 23 on the forum Minbar Suriya al-Islami www.nnuu.org.vb ).

In fact, bin Laden's last audio message, issued December 16, 2004, included an explicit call for attacks in the Gulf. After extended criticism of the Saudi regime, the final section of the hour-long diatribe focused on the need to turn on the "American-Zionist coalition, their allies and their agents … to seek out their weak spots." In particular, he called on the mujahideen to "make every effort in your power to stop the greatest theft in history of the natural resources of both present and future generations." To do this, they should "focus operations on [oil production], especially in Iraq and the Gulf area, since this will cause them to die off." The gravity of these statements was graphically demonstrated last September when Saudi security forces, after a 48-hour armed confrontation at al-Dammam, uncovered a stash of forged documents aimed at providing militants with access to some of Saudi Arabia's principal oil and gas facilities. Since this time, forum traffic has kept the "U.S. thirst for oil" theme at the fore as an explanation for American strategy in the region, and, accordingly, has highlighted the vulnerability of the superpower, as illustrated by the episodes of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Comments to this effect populate the forums passim.

Kuwait's preparatory precautions are therefore not an over reaction. A report from the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research www.ecssr.ac.ae indicated that "the al-Qaeda organization represents a real danger to the Gulf states, which may be their next target." It gives as reason for this analysis the lack of organization and countermeasures taken against the danger, which "leave the field open for the terrorists to gain a foothold and recruit new elements in preparation for a new wave of terror attacks in the region."

An extended audio statement from Ayman al-Zawahiri, believed to have been made in mid-September, was posted on December 9 on the al-Safinat jihadi forum http://202.71.102.108/~alsafnat/vb . Under the rubric "Four years on since the attacks on New York and Washington," and dated Sha'ban 1426 (September 2005), the 48-minute tape was produced by al-Sahab Media Productions, an organization that has come to be known as al-Qaeda's video production company. The statement is worth examining in detail since, amid the rhetoric of denunciation and challenge, it reveals much about the present state of morale within the al-Qaeda organization.

The presentation, entitled Mu'awwiqat al-Jihad (Obstacles to Jihad), is provided with English subtitles and is hence intended for the widest possible circulation. It starts off in a buoyant tone: "I wish to speak to you about the victory that, with Allah's permission, is imminent for a simple reason, that the key to victory is in our hands." Subsequently, however, the tone shifts, indicating some exasperation at the lack of the "final push" required to ensure the success of the jihad, outlining that "the primary cause of defeat is in ourselves." As if to counter a mood of despondency, al-Zawahiri underlines how the jihad has already achieved successes. In Iraq, he maintains, the resistance "stabs America every day and makes it scream and search feverishly for a way out of its predicament there." And in Israel”"were it not for the mujahideen's confrontation of Israel and its agents (our rulers) Israel would have now expanded to many times its current size." The mujahideen have also, he asserts, effectively defended Islam from the "puppet rulers," under whom "the corruption … would have worsened and they would have sought to eradicate Islam."

Al-Zawahiri spends most of the tape discussing the situation in Afghanistan. Keen to stress the unity of ranks between the Taliban and the mujahideen, despite all that has happened, al-Zawahiri reverses the interpretation of the New York attacks leading to the downfall of the Islamic Emirate, and instead speaks of the victory that galvanized the jihad. He maintains that the emirate's structure under Mullah Omar is firm and "controls large, extensive parts of eastern and western Afghanistan." Al-Zawahiri is particularly sensitive to the impression that the alliance between al-Qaeda and the Taliban has faded since the U.S. invasion, stressing the comments made by top Taliban commander and former intelligence chief Mullah Dadullah in an al-Jazeera interview that "we sacrificed our government for the mujahideen of al-Qaeda" as "our Islamic obligation" in the face of "a shared enemy." Al-Zawahiri then pointedly holds up Mullah Omar as a paragon of a jihadi emir, in comparison to those who subsequently apostated "at the feet of America and Israel." The Taliban are similarly regarded as uniquely steadfast against the infidel enemy.

The entire passage appears to be an extended vote of gratitude to the Taliban for sheltering al-Qaeda. Interestingly, throughout this long paean to the Taliban, al-Zawahiri speaks little of Osama Bin Laden”save to say that they protected a hero of Islam, and somewhat cryptically writes off the question of Osama as "no longer an issue of an individual but has become the question of the honor of Islam. "

For all the bullish talk of triumph, the message of al-Zawahiri's address appears equally crafted as a last-minute appeal for support to help prevent the defeat of the mujahideen. "The key to victory is in our hands," he states, "and in turn, the primary cause of defeat is in ourselves." This part of the message is particularly noteworthy, in that the reproach and call for jihad contradict the image of success he maintains the jihad has already achieved. Al-Zawahiri gives his diagnosis for the problems besetting the jihad: "The first battle we must win is our battle with ourselves, our battle with out weakness and helplessness and clinging to the earth our preference for small gains." He then goes on to encourage the mujahideen by belittling the enemy as having little else but technology on their side, and "driven only by fear and desire in the field they don't make a stand in any honest encounter." At root of the problem of the lack of victory is Muslims' "fear and ignorance of fighting" and their "submission to [the regimes'] terrorism and intimidation." Al-Zawahiri then develops this theme on the disastrous passivity of the Muslims; taking the example of the assassination of Anwar al-Sadat by Khalid al-Islambouli, he notes how everyone subsequently abandoned them to their fate and contented themselves with "passive praise." Another example is Saudi Arabia, where Muslims who called for reform were "left to fight alone" and—in a probable reference to the penitent Saudi jihadi shaykhs”"some callers to reform relapsed and turned around to stab their brothers, the Mujahideen in their backs."

Al-Zawahiri appears genuinely exasperated at the lack of enthusiasm in the Muslim community for the rigors of jihad and the ability of the broader community to content itself with the war of words. He scoffs, from his position out there on the front line in the hills, at the armchair commentators. "If each one of us wants to turn into a debater, analyst, and specialist who dresses in elegant clothes, attends seminars and appears on screen, then returns to his house safe from the tyranny of the Crusaders and their agents, then there is no hope for deliverance."

There is also a tone of negativity in al-Zawahiri's response to practical criticism: "if the Jihad brings on loss and disaster, then show us what you've got in your quiver! What have you done to confront these disasters other than shedding crocodile tears and issuing condemnations and giving sermons and writing books?" Doubts concerning the legitimacy of jihad are similarly dismissed. To the argument distinguishing attacks on America and Israel from attacks on Muslim leaders, "we ask them: with which Book and which Sunnah have you differentiated between the foreign enemy and his domestic agent?" To the argument of timing al-Zawahiri is no less scornful: "If you want us to postpone the jihad, and be patient, and resort to your easy, comfortable methods, then how long must we wait for your barren ways to bear fruit? Another 100 years?"

This is a remarkable document from al-Zawahiri, indicating some serious doubts at the top of al-Qaeda as to the prospects of the success of jihad. While exhortations to jihad are commonplace, as are criticisms of laziness in the Muslim youth or vigorous calls to develop an appropriate jihad-consciousness, the present tape appears to take the form of an eleventh-hour warning, addressed this time not to the opponents, so much as the rightful supporters of jihad. "History," al-Zawahiri warns, "shall hold it against you that when the Mujahid vanguards rose and hope was awakened in the ability of the Muslim Ummah to resist, you stabbed it from behind. As long as this malignant illness continues to survive within us there is no hope for victory"

I don't think at all that the sense that al_Zawahiri in his recent messages is not happy with the way things are going results from taking his remarks out of context, as some have suggested.I agree that Zawahiri sounds unhappy about how things are going. But I'm not sure he sounds any more frustrated or disappointed than he did 2-3 years ago.
I wonder what goes through his head, while he hides somewhere, reading the newspapers, and hoping every few months that al-Jazeera will indulge his latest attempt to recruit young men to get themselves killed to advance his tired old Ikhwan cause.

Supposed Qaeda Recording Lauds Taliban

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Dec. 24 (Agence France-Presse) - The Arab satellite channel Al Arabiya broadcast an audio recording on Saturday purportedly from Al Qaeda's No. 2 man, Ayman al-Zawahiri, claiming that the Taliban still controls large parts of Afghanistan.

However, Al Arabiya said it was unable to determine the date of the recording, in which the man presented as Mr. Zawahiri "did not speak of recent events."

The recording ran two weeks after the Qatar-based Al Jazeera network showed a videotape said to be of Mr. Zawahiri, claiming Al Qaeda's leader, Osama bin Laden, was still alive, a recording the network later said was three months old.

"The Islamic administration is, thanks be to God, still present," said the voice attributed to Mr. Zawahiri in Saturday's broadcast. "It controls large parts of the east and south of Afghanistan and is waging a sustained guerilla campaign against the crusaders and apostates."

Al-Qaida deputy leader says Taliban controls large land in Afghanistan


CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Al-Qaida's deputy leader said in an audiotape aired Saturday that Taliban's fighters control large areas in Afghanistan and are fighting American forces and the U.S-backed Afghan government.


It was not clear when the tape purportedly by al-Qaida No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri was recorded. Dubai-based Al-Arabiya television, which aired about 30 seconds of the tape, said al-Zawahri did not refer to any new events in the speech.


The tape's authenticity could not be independently confirmed, but the voice resembled that of al-Zawahri's confirmed in past recordings.


Al-Zawahri said the Taliban movement is controlling large sectors of east and south Afghanistan and are"waging a guerrilla war against the crusaders and their cronies."


The last tape by al-Zawahri emerged on Dec. 11, though it was believed to have been recorded in mid-September. In it, the Egyptian-born militant urged all Muslims to take up arms to fight against "the Cross and Zionism" and warned that the Islamic world had "no hope for victory" until all Muslims signed on to the al-Qaida-led jihad.


That tape dealt with similar issues as the recording aired Saturday. In the Dec. 11 tape, al-Zawahri credits toppled Taliban leader Mullah Omar with leading a three-year campaign "against the Crusaders and apostates in Afghanistan" and purportedly taking control of "extensive parts of eastern and western Afghanistan."


Mullah Omar is believed to be hiding in Afghanistan, where Taliban forces continue to launch regular attacks but do not control large swaths of territory.


U.S.-led forces toppled the hardline Taliban regime in late 2001 when it refused to turn over bin Laden and stop providing a haven to the group blamed for the Sept. 11 attacks.


Al Zawhari appeared about eight times this year to address al-Qaida followers and other Muslim militants while bin Laden has not appeared in a video for more than a year. In a video recorded in September, al-Zawahri said bin Laden is still alive.

For a couple of weeks there was talk on the forums about a forthcoming Zawahiri audio. Maybe it's a byproduct of the Zawahiri video from around2005.09.11, of which al-Jazeera showed only a portion until the whole thing went up on the web. But this one went to al-Arabiya, Dubai. Was it already on the web, anybody know? If so, then al-Arabiya's broadcast doesn't mean much.

If Zawahiri gets out of Pakistan, any theories about where he will go?

Al-Qaida's deputy leader says recent hints by American officials of a troop reduction in Iraq are a victory for Islam.

In a videotape, excerpts of which were*aired*by Aljazeera on Friday, Ayman al-Zawahiri was apparently referring to recent comments by Donald Rumsfeld, the US defence secretary, who on 22 December hinted that the US military will soon begin reducing its troop strength in Iraq below 138,000.

"I congratulate my nation and bless Islam's victory in Iraq," he said.

"Oh my Muslim brothers, I told you more than a year ago that the pullout of America's troops from Iraq would be a matter of time and Americans are now begging to leave and negotiate with the mujahidin.

"Bush, the liar, was forced to announce in November 2005 that he would withdraw his troops from Iraq.

"Since Bush is addicted to lying, he justified his withdrawal by saying that Iraqi forces have become well-trained. But he did not set a timetable for the pullout.

Al-Zawahiri asked: "If your forces with all its aircraft, missiles, tanks and fleets are moaning, bleeding and looking for an escape from Iraq, then will the hypocrites, conspirators, infidels [the Iraqi government] resist what the 'greatest power in the world' has failed to resist?

"The timetable of withdrawal was set a long time ago and you [Bush] have to confess that you have been defeated in Iraq as you have been defeated in Afghanistan and will be shortly defeated in Palestine if Allah's willing."


Pakistan's earthquake

Al-Zawahiri went on to call on Muslim nations and charity and relief organisations, particularly Muslim ones, to offer aid to their brethren affected by the earthquake in Pakistan.

"I call you not to offer aid to the Pakistani government," he said. He described its administration as corrupt, saying its army leadership took bribes.

He described the members of the ruling party in Pakistan as "a gang of hypocrites".

"I call on Islamic people's charity organisations to come to Pakistan and supervise the relief and charity works offered for those hit by the earthquake.

The previous videotape from al-Zawahiri, aired by Aljazeera last October, also called on Muslims to aid victims of*the earthquake in Pakistan which killed an estimated 78,000 people and left 3 million homeless.

He also denounced the recent parliamentary elections in Egypt.

"The election was an American game in which Islamic movements were allowed to run with a limited number of candidates. And if they win, they will be a minority in the parliament.

"America paved the way for the ruling party to practice all its crimes and get the votes that have been already prearranged."

Thanks guys. You know, I keep getting the feeling that Zawahiri is near the end of his tether. It's a vague feeling, but I get it again and again. His talks all seem to have a forlorn, disappointed tone. His new congratulation of I-dunno-who for an Islamic "victory" in Iraq is rather pathetic, even by Qaeda standards. I'm not sure about it; maybe he has always sounded that way.

Again Zawahiri calls on Muslim charities to help in Pakistan, re the earthquake. Hmm. Is he concerned for bin Ladin or some other associates in the quake area? No, he would see any number of Pakistanis die of exposure before he would invite civilians into a sensitive area. This quake business might be an outright deception, hinting that he himself is in Pakistan when he isn't. And I guess he wants to say something nice about Muslims to make sure that al-Jazeera will broadcast at least a portion of the latest lecture from that mass murderer. But one more theory, which is rather attractive, at least to me: Zawahiri might want to make contact (probably through his photographer/courier) with an agent of a corrupt Muslim charity, in the hope of getting help to escape Pakistan. Note that he wants Muslim charity personnel in Pakistan. He might need money to bribe somebody at a Pakistani port. Less likely, he might ask to get carried out on a ship owned by a charity, or on a yacht owned by some Muslim bigshot who is on a charity mission -- some ship which will not receive the usual level of scrutiny. Al-Qaeda has been heavily dependent on Muslim terrorist charities throughout its existence.

Certainly Zawahiri is reading the newspapers. About the internet, he knew about the snuff movies that his friends were making; he objected to those, as bad advertising, but he did call on Sunni terrorists to exploit the internet. I'd say it is probable that Zawahiri personally is using the internet, with an ASDL or better connection, at least in a read-only way.

The brothers are annoyed that this Zawahiri video, like the previous one, has been censored by Qatar. (The emir of Qatar is the principal owner of al-Jazeera.) But this time, none of them predicted the appearance of the video, and I don't see any indication that the whole video will be appearing on the net, although it might. Did al-Jazeera tell Zawahiri, or his courier, to keep the tape secret from everone except al-Jazeera (which they failed to do last time)? Anyway why does al-Zawahiri depend on al-Jazeera? There must be a reason.

About the air strike against Zawahiri, according to a source on the Hill, some group was assembling for a dinner in celebration of Eid, and Zawahiri was expected.

The locals must know if there were any Arabs, Egyptians, etc. coming and going from these three houses. One claim from the area says there are 7 Arabs among the dead, and another says 11 "militants" were killed.

I haven't yet seen anything remarkable about this episode in the Wahhabi press or in salafist/jihadist/caliphist forums -- only the usual propaganda and denial. Nothing original or credible.

What about these bodies and DNA? I'm beginning to wonder if some American personnel were landed by helicopter to get tissue samples or bodies. Maybe Pakistani personnel were employed. It seems likely that manned aircraft participated in the raid. The USA has used a chopper against Qaeda/Taliban forces within Pakistan on at least one previous occasion. The locals reported hearing aircraft, and seeing an illumination flare. Is it possible that the houses were blown when Zawahiri (or Zawahiri's car) came into view from the Predators, and then Zawahiri was captured alive?

Airstrike misses Al-Qaeda chief

'Wrong information' blamed for Pakistan deaths

AN AMERICAN airstrike targeting Ayman al-Zawahiri, the Al-Qaeda mastermind, was prompted by “wrong information” and killed Pakistani villagers including five women and five children, according to senior Pakistani officials.

The attack took place in the early hours of Friday, when CIA-operated Predator drones circled the village of Damadola in the Bajaur area in northwest Pakistan before launching four Hellfire missiles at a mud-walled compound. Three houses were razed to the ground and 22 people died.

US officials said the raid was based on “good reporting” of Zawahiri’s presence in the village at a dinner celebrating the Muslim Eid holiday. Intelligence officials took away four bodies for identification.

The 54-year-old Egyptian doctor has been on the run for more than four years despite a $25m (£14m) price on his head and is said to have had narrow escapes in the areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Damadola lies in this rugged, mountainous area, just five miles from Afghanistan. When Pakistani intelligence received a tip-off that Zawahiri was there, it seemed to be a likely hideout. The village is controlled by a pro-Taliban party, the Tehrik Nifaz Shariat-i-Mohammadi, led by the charismatic Sufi Mohammad, whose supporters are believed to help Taliban and Al-Qaeda leaders on the run.

The neighbouring Afghan province of Kunar is dominated by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, the fundamentalist warlord with whom Zawahiri has close ties.

As the dead were buried yesterday amid angry scenes, villagers confirmed that their Eid guests had included four men who had come from Afghanistan. But they insisted that the four were not high-level Al-Qaeda officials as claimed. “We live on the border and all have friends and relatives on both sides,” said one villager.

Among the mourners was Shah Zaman, who lost two sons and a daughter in the attack. “I ran out and saw planes,” he said. “I ran towards a nearby mountain with my wife. When we were running we heard three more explosions and I saw my home being hit.”

Sahibzada Haroon Rashid, a member of parliament who lives nearby, said the planes had targeted three houses belonging to jewellery dealers. “The houses have been razed,” he said. “There is nothing left. Pieces of the missiles are scattered all around. Everything has been blackened in a 100-yard radius.”

Last night Pakistan’s foreign ministry protested to the US ambassador over what it described as the “loss of innocent civilian lives”. Shaikh Rashid Ahmed, Pakistan’s minister of information, said: “We don’t know whether Zawahiri was there or not. We are investigating.”

Another senior government official insisted that Zawahiri was not in the village. “They acted on wrong information,” he said. One Pakistani intelligence officer claimed that Zawahiri had been present but the Americans had taken too long to react and “missed him by six hours”.

Jan. 20 - Ayman al-Zawahri praised Islamic fighters in Afghanistan, according to an Internet audio tape posted a day after Osama bin Laden warned of attacks in America.



In Washington, a U.S. Central Intelligence Agency spokeswoman said it was Zawahri's voice on the tape but a U.S. counter-terrorism official said it was several years old.

"I am honoured to recite this jihadist poem," Zawahri said, praising mujahideen fighters. "We shall remain true to our oath (with the Afghan mujahideen)."

The message emerged one day after bin Laden, al Qaeda's leader, said the group was preparing attacks in the United States but was open to a conditional truce with the Americans, according to an audio tape attributed to him.

In his 17-minute-tape, Zawahri praised an Islamist Afghan poet, Mohebullah Kandahari: "The owner of the sword and pen, who carried both a machine gun and the Koran, known in scholarly circles ... and who could be seen in jihadi arenas from the time of the Russian communist attack on Afghanistan until the crusader raid (led by the United States in 2001)."

The CIA spokeswoman also said that after conducting a technical analysis, the CIA concluded with 'high confidence' that the voice on the tape was that of al-Zawahri.

The little-known Web site which carried the tape said it was new but the U.S. counter-terrorism official said that it had surfaced previously several years ago.

The United States conducted an air strike in Pakistan last week, which officials said was aimed at Zawahri and in which Pakistani intelligence sources said "a few militants" had been killed.

The last tape attributed to Zawahri was issued earlier this month. He said U.S. President George W. Bush's plans to withdraw troops from Iraq meant Washington had been defeated by the Muslims.

Bin Laden and Zawahri have eluded capture since U.S.-led forces toppled Afghanistan's Taliban government in 2001 after al Qaeda's September 11 attacks on the United States.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- Al-Qaeda's second-in-command met his deputy last year at a house hit in a recent U.S. missile strike in which at least four of the terror network's operatives may have died, Pakistani intelligence officials said Saturday.

Ayman al-Zawahri, the apparent target of the Jan. 13 attack, met his deputy, Abu Farraj al-Libbi, in Damadola early last year, a security official said on condition of anonymity, adding that Libyan-born Al-Libbi told Pakistani interrogators of the meeting after his capture in May 2005.

"His statement was later verified, and we were able to confirm that al-Zawahri visited Damadola," the official said. "We have intelligence reports that Ayman al-Zawahri visited the house of one Bakhtpur Khan months before what happened last week."

Al-Libbi, once al-Qaeda's No. 3 leader, is accused of masterminding two attempts to assassinate Pakistan's President Gen. Pervez Musharraf for making the Islamic nation a key ally of the United States in its war on terror. After his arrest in Pakistan, he was turned over to Washington for further investigations.

Khan's house was among three destroyed in the Jan. 13 pre-dawn airstrike that has caused widespread anger in Pakistan. Khan is listed among the 13 villagers who died.

U.S. and Pakistani intelligence - helped by tribesmen and Afghans - began monitoring Khan's home after the al-Libbi confession, the officials said.

Pakistani authorities suspect al-Qaida operatives had gathered last week in Damadola, near the Afghan border, to eat dinner and plan attacks to be carried out early this year in Afghanistan and Pakistan, another intelligence official said.

The officials, all speaking on condition of anonymity due to the issue's sensitivity, said at least four foreign militants also may have died in the attack, including al-Qaeda explosives and chemical weapons expert Midhat Mursi and a son-in-law of al-Zawahri. The United States is offering a $5 million US for Mursi.

"Their bodies were taken by Faqir Mohammed to a nearby house and then were shifted to an undisclosed location," said one official, referring to a local pro-Taliban cleric, also understood to be at the dinner.

As many as a dozen al-Qaeda extremists may have gathered for the dinner, which began soon after sundown, but some of them left before the strike was launched at around 3:10 a.m., another security official said.

Another wanted terrorist, Abu Suleman, is also thought to have escaped, one of the officials said. Authorities accuse Suleman, who is believed to be Algerian, of plotting attacks in Pakistan and say he twice narrowly avoided capture in the past two years.

Pakistani and U.S. officials have reportedly said that the Egyptian-born al-Zawahri skipped the meeting and was not killed in the attack.

Aljazeera has aired a new video in which al-Qaida's deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahiri calls George Bush a butcher and threatens a new attack in the US.

Monday's video was his first appearance since a US air strike that targeted him on 13 January in Pakistan.

Al-Zawahiri said he had survived the raid which he said killed "innocents".


The air strike hit a building in the eastern Pakistan village of Damadola, reportedly killing four al-Qaida leaders.

Thirteen villagers were also killed in the strike, angering many Pakistanis.

The video appeared to be recorded this month, as it mentioned a call for a truce issued by Bin Laden in an audio tape Aljazeera said was recorded in January.

"US airplanes ... launched a raid on a village in near Peshawar after Eid al-Adha in which 18 Muslim men, women and children were killed in what they call the war against terror," al-Zawahiri said.

"They said this was intended to kill myself and four brothers but now the whole world has discovered their lies ...".

Egyptian-born Al-Zawahri and Saudi-born Bin Laden are believed to be hiding in a mountainous area on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Pakistani intelligence sources said four top al-Qaida fighters were believed to have been killed in the 13 January raid which US officials say was aimed at the al-Qaida number two.

White robes

Al-Zawahiri, shown wearing white robes and a white turban, said the US had ignored an offer from al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden for a truce.

"Butcher of Washington, you are not only defeated and a
liar, but also a failure. You are a curse on your own nation," he said, referring to Bush. "Bush, do you know where I am? I am among the Muslim masses,"he said.

"My second message is to the American people, who are drowning in illusions. I tell you that Bush and his gang are shedding your blood and wasting your money in frustrated adventures," he said, speaking in a forceful and angry voice.

But your leaders, who are keen to accumulate wealth, insist on throwing you in battles and killing your souls in Iraq and Afghanistan and - God willing - on your own land."

The video came in the wake of a 19 January audiotape by bin
Laden in which he warned that al-Qaida is preparing attacks
in the US but he offered a truce "with fair conditions" to build Iraq and Afghanistan.

The tape was the first message from Bin Laden in over a year.

Al-Zawahiri continued: "The American planes raided in compliance with Musharraf the traitor and his security apparatus, the slave of the Crusaders and the Jews.

Extent of savagery

"In seeking to kill my humble self and four of my brothers, the whole world has discovered the extent of America's lies and failures and the extent of its savagery in fighting Islam and Muslims," al-Zawahiri said.

Aljazeera said it was airing excerpts of the video, and it showed two short parts. It was not immediately know how long the entire tape was.

There is increased "chatter" in the terrorist world about a major new attack in the West – a sign often leading to an impending strike;

The date Feb. 5 has been specifically referenced in some of this chatter;

The date is significant to Osama bin Laden;

Much of the western world will be watching television that day;

The release of al-Qaida videotapes seems to provide clues about the dates of future attacks and, in this scenario, Feb. 5 becomes the most likely near-term terror strike date. Terror attacks seem to follow the release of al-Qaida videos by about 30 days. Some intelligence analysts are noting the significance of the release of videos recently by both Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri. But there does seem to be an unmistakable pattern involved in the release of videos and al-Qaida attacks.

Zawahiri seems to release videos in pairs. After the release of the second video, within 30 days a major event occurs.

I suspect that Ayman al-Zawahiri is just a tad angry and his anger actually does confirm that he lost a few "brothers" in that attack at Damadola on January 13.

Zawahiri is angry all right, and this time he does a poor job of concealing it and looking holy and on top of everything. It's his weakest performance to date. Snarling at Bush personally, and not much else. I'm disappointed.
I don't think these Zawahiri appearances presage any attack. On the contrary, I think Zawahiri's time has almost run out. If an attack is being planned, it is by somebody else, who is informing Zawahiri, the TV star.
Although Zawahiri was invited to this Eid dinner in the boonies, I've thought for a long time that he is hiding in a city. He never looks like a guy who has been roughing it. He reads or hears news from outside Pakistan, such as the article in the Times by Salman Rushdie. I think he personally met at least one of the London bombers (Khan). And I'll bet he keeps in touch with other wanted Egyptians, of which the late Abu Khabab was one.
Our side somehow knew in advance about this dinner party. I have a theory about how they knew, but I'll let Zawahiri sweat about that one :D

I find the relatively short time elapsed between release of the tape and the earliest date it could have been made interesting. Most tapes and videos from Bin Laden and Zawahiri have followed a, presumably more secure, longer and more circuitous route to public release.

It is absolutely correct that in the past there was a good, though not perfect, correlation between the timing of attacks and public statements of Al Qaeda leaders. This many statements this close together without anything happening is fairly unprecedented. This tells me that:

1. We are in for a really big attack very soon.
2. Zawahiri needed to show his followers that he is still alive and able to communicate.
3. Zawahiri is really ticked off at how close they came to getting him and at some of his old friends now being in the company of virgins, and just had to lash out at his tormentors.

My gut instinct is that it is not #1, but the next weeks will tell. It will be interesting to see if, in case no immediate major attack is forthcoming, we will see some "where's the beef" griping in the Islamist forums.

Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri: With the collaboration of Musharraf the traitor and his security agencies, the servants of the Crusaders and the Jews, American airplanes attacked the village of Damdula, in Bajuar, shortly after the Feast of the Sacrifice. The planes killed 18 Muslims – men, women, and children – in their fight against the Jihad, which they call terrorism, claiming that they were trying to kill yours truly and four other brothers. The whole world witnessed the extent of the American lies and frustration, as well as the extent of its barbarism, in its war against Islam and the Muslims.


In response to this incident, I would like to convey several messages. The first message I convey to the butcher of Washington, Bush, to whom I say: Bush, not only are you a defeated liar, but, Allah be praised, you are also a complete failure. You bring misfortune upon your nation. You have brought and will bring catastrophes and tragedies upon it. Know, oh Bush, you failing Crusader, that your conflict is with the nation of monotheism, with us, who believe in Allah, the One, the Unique, "who begets not, nor is He begotten, and none is like him," and who has sent His Prophet to us with a well preserved book, which has not been altered or forged like the books that preceded it. No human being is capable of producing a similar miraculous book. Allah told us, in His eternal and miraculous book, that "every soul shall taste death," and that the day of death is predetermined and predestined, and I will meet my predestined death, according to the will of Allah. However, if my time to die has not yet come, neither you nor all the forces of the world – and even all creations – could hasten my death even by a second.


Bush, do you know where I am? I am among the Muslim masses, and I am enjoying the grace Allah has bestowed upon me – I am enjoying their support, generosity, protection, and their participation in the Jihad against you, until we defeat you, Allah willing.

My second message is to the American people, which is immersed in illusions: Bush and his gang are shedding your blood, and wasting your money in failed adventures. They are involving you in a conflict with the Muslims, which you cannot win, in order to increase their wealth. They are drawing up a future for you, which is painted with the color of blood, the smoke of bombings, and the darkness of fear. The mujahid lion of Islam, Sheik Osama bin Laden, has offered you an honorable way out of the crisis you are in. But your leaders - because of their desire to accumulate wealth - insists upon casting you into perdition and causing your deaths, in Iraq and Afghanistan, and even, Allah willing, within your own home. Your leaders have responded to Sheik Osama's initiative by saying they do not negotiate with terrorists and that they are winning the war against terrorism. I say to them: You greedy liars, you war merchants – who is withdrawing from Iraq and Afghanistan, we or you? Whose soldiers are committing suicide out of despair , ours or yours?


Oh, American mothers, if the Department of Defense phones to inform you that your son will be returning to you in a coffin – think about George Bush. Oh British wives, if the Ministry of Defense phones to inform you that your husband will return paralyzed, chopped into pieces, and burned – think about Tony Blair.

Witness: al-Qaida Leader Lived in Calif.

An FBI informant testified Monday that a top al-Qaida official lived in California's Central Valley in the years before the 2001 terrorist attacks, but the statements were attacked immediately as unreliable. The testimony came during an ongoing terrorism-related trial involving a father and son from Lodi, an agricultural town about 35 miles south of Sacramento.

The government informant, Naseem Khan, testified that he often saw Ayman al-Zawahri, Osama bin Laden's physician and top deputy, attending a mosque in Lodi in 1998 and 1999. Khan was living there at the time. "Every time I would go to the mosque, (al-Zawahri) would be coming or going," Khan testified, according to a story posted Monday on The Sacramento Bee's Web site. "He would quietly come to the mosque and leave."

Prosecutors offered the testimony to show why the FBI began investigating Lodi's Islamic community. The agency recruited Khan in December 2001, and he initially focused his undercover efforts on two Muslim clerics. He soon began concentrating on 23-year-old Hamid Hayat, who sometimes worked seasonal jobs at a fruit-packing plant. Hayat and his father, Umer, who drove an ice cream truck, have been charged with lying to federal investigators about the younger man's suspected attendance at an al-Qaida terrorist training camp in Pakistan in 2003.

Khan's testimony was discounted immediately outside court by law enforcement officials, Lodi residents and defense attorneys representing the two men on trial. "It's outrageous," said Wazhma Mojaddidi, Hamid Hayat's attorney. "He (al-Zawahri) never lived in Lodi." Nasim Khan, no relation to the FBI informant, was the mosque's president from 1998 to 2000 and said al-Zawahri never attended. He and Mojaddidi both noted that al-Zawahri, an Egyptian, would have been noticed in the largely Pakistani community.

Al-Zawahri is known to have traveled to the United States in the years before the terrorist attacks, as did members of the Taliban. Federal officials and news accounts say he passed through northern California on fundraising missions during the late 1980s and early 1990s, travels that included visits to mosques in the San Francisco Bay area, Stockton and Sacramento. He may have lived in the Sacramento area for an undetermined period in or around 1995 while visiting area mosques, according to an FBI agent in Washington, D.C., who spoke Monday on condition he not be named.

After August 1998, U.S. authorities were aggressively seeking al-Zawahri and bin Laden in connection with the U.S. Embassy bombings in Tanzania and Kenya that killed more than 200 people, including 12 Americans. Al-Zawahri headed the Egyptian Islamic Jihad until it merged with bin Laden's al-Qaida in 1998.

Naseem Khan, 32, was working in a convenience store in Bend, Ore., when he was recruited by the FBI. He completed his testimony Monday against Hamid Hayat, who is charged with three counts of making false statements to the FBI about attending the camp and with providing material support to terrorists. He faces up to 39 years in prison if convicted on all counts.

Umer Hayat, 48, faces 16 years in prison if convicted of two counts of making false statements to FBI agents. The Hayats are being tried before separate juries that are scheduled to be brought together for the first time Tuesday in U.S. District Court.

Al-Zawahri praises Iraq insurgents; unclear when message was recorded

CAIRO, Egypt - Al-Qaida’s deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri praised insurgents in Iraq — particularly Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi — and called on all Muslims to support them in a video posted Thursday on the Internet.

The video was dated with an Islamic month corresponding to November 2005 — and al-Zawahri mentions an Oct. 23 earthquake that hit Pakistan and Afghanistan. But it appeared to be the first time the 28-minute video has been made public.

It was not clear why the video was not released soon after the date it was allegedly filmed. Al-Zawahri has appeared in at least three videotapes filmed since November, all of them aired on the Al-Jazeera news network. Thursday’s video was posted on a Web forum used by Islamic militants to issue public statements and videos.

In the footage, al-Zawahri appears sitting, wearing a white turban and a gray robe with a microphone pinned to it. An automatic weapon is leaning against a brown backdrop behind him.

“The Islamic nation must support the heroic mujahedeen (holy warriors) in Iraq, who are fighting on the very front line for the dignity of Islam,” al-Zawahri said, waving his right hand toward the camera.

“And to my brother mujahedeen in Iraq, I say, Stay firm. Stay together. Your enemy has begun to falter, so don’t stop pursuing him until he flees defeated,” he said.

He called on Muslims to support his “beloved brother” Al-Zarqawi, who heads al-Qaida in Iraq. “I have lived with him up close, and have seen nothing but good from him,” al-Zawahri said.

“I warn all Muslims in Iraq: Anyone who impedes the jihad against the Crusader occupiers is a traitor to God and his prophet ... and a traitor to the rest of the Muslims.”

Reached Wednesday evening, two U.S. counterterrorism officials declined immediate comment.

How recently was video made?

It was not clear if the video was made before or after a Nov. 9 triple suicide bombing against hotels in the Jordanian capital Amman that killed at least 60 people, mostly Muslims.

Al-Qaida in Iraq claimed responsibility for the attack, but the civilian deaths brought widespread criticism of al-Zarqawi, even from some Islamic militants. In the wake of the backlash over the Amman bombings, al-Zarqawi joined his group to a wider coalition of Iraqi insurgent groups and has not issued his own statements since January, apparently seeking to lie low.

In Thursday’s video, al-Zawahri did not mention the hotel bombings and, since the timing was unknown, it could not be known if the comments aimed to show support for al-Zarqawi amid the criticism.

Anniversary of Tora Bora battle

Al-Zawahri — an Egyptian who is Osama bin Laden’s deputy in al-Qaida and is believed to be hiding in Afghanistan or Pakistan — said he was making the video to mark the fourth anniversary of the December 2001 battle of Tora Bora, in which U.S. forces besieged bin Laden and al-Qaida fighters in mountainous caves of Afghanistan.

Al-Zawahri denounced Bush as the “caesar of Washington” and accused him of lying about progress in the war on terror.

“Bush, son of Bush, eliminating Israel is the duty of every believer,” al-Zawahri said.

“If we commit to peaceful action, they will demand we adhere to international laws and treaties that mean nothing to them. If we adhere to that, they will ask us to impose constraint on what they call terrorism and war on Israel. Then if we adhere to that, they will demand we recognize Israel and establish normal relations with it,” he said.

He pointed to Israeli opposition to the Islamic militant group Hamas’ entering Palestinian elections. He did not mention Hamas’ victory in the voting, a possible indication the video was made before the January elections.

In the last al-Zawahri video to be aired — on March 4 — he congratulated Hamas on its victory and offered support.

Al-Zawahri appeared in two other videos in January. On Jan. 19, bin Laden released an audiotape, parts of which were aired on al-Jazeera — the first message from the al-Qaida leader in more than a year.

Videos illustrating current Taliban activities in Afghanistan recently obtained by Adnkronos International (AKI), detail Taliban operations to lure members of the Afghan National Army and the coalition troops out of their bases and target them in the narrow valleys of Afghanistan. Sources say al-Zawahiri is behind this strategy and suggest that he is deep inside the Afghan provinces as US-led forces continue to track him down.

AL-ZAWAHIRI'S STRATEGY IN AL-QAEDA

Considered Osama bin Laden's mentor, Egyptian doctor al-Zawahiri is at the heart of the al-Qaeda leadership, with Washington offering a 25 million dollar bounty for his capture.

In the early 1990s, Osama bin Laden’s call for foreign forces to "leave the Arabian peninsula" had a muted response from the Americans. The reaction to bin Laden did not change until May 1998 when al-Zawahiri appeared on the scene and changed the al-Qaeda leader's strategy, according to Saudi dissident Saad al-Faqih, who runs the UK-based Movement for Islamic Reform in Arabia (MIRA)

The strategy was to firstly organize a Muslim backlash by sharpening the focus of the conflict and secondly, as Saad al-Faqih has previously analysed, Zawahiri impressed upon bin Laden the importance of understanding the American 'cowboy mentality', which implied that the best way to confront the Americans was to use extreme measures.

The al-Qaeda attacks on the US embassies in Kenya and the subsequent 09/11 terrorist attacks in the United States served both these objectives. It brought the Americans into the battlefield (Afghanistan) on their own and as a result of the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, a powerful Muslim backlash was generated around the world.

Al-Zawahiri's strategy of bringing the Americans into Afghanistan, also has its roots in popular Islamic beliefs among mujahadeen groups, that in the promised battle to defeat the forces fighting against God, warriors in the area known as Bilad-i-Khurasan would regroup, with the final showdown taking place in the Palestinian territories. Khurasan is the ancient name of a geographical area that stretches from Peshawar (in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province) through the Pashtun belt of Pakistan's south-western province of Baluchistan, into some parts of Afghanistan, Tajikistan and also Iran.

Religious considerations aside there were also solid strategic reasons for wanting to bring the Americans to fight on the merciless Afghan terrain.

However, when the Americans did attack Afghanistan, they did so cautiously, carrying out air raids against the Taliban and helping the Northern Alliance and anti-Taliban warlords defeat the hardline regime.

Once the Taliban were ousted, the US-led force trained and built up the Afghan National Army and the Afghan police and ensured that they were posted throughout the country. The coalition troops instead remained within their heavily-fortified bases.

After a major battle in April 2002 in Shahikot near Gardez, some two hours drive south of the capital Kabul, in which 18 US soldiers were killed in a Taliban offensive led by commander Saifullah Mansoor, the Americans decided to stay in the urban centres and not enter the country's more dangerous narrow terrain.

So while in 2004 and 2005, the Taliban had the same plans for a bloody spring offensive against the US-led forces they were unable to implement that until this year, as the coalition forces simply refused to be lured. Taliban fighters carried out many attacks on American bases in Khost, Paktia and Paktika but they had very little impact on the strength of the force. The Americans could always carry out air strikes or call on the Afghan forces to conduct ground attacks.

The period from 2005 to 2006 allowed the Taliban-led Afghan insurgents to regroup and in particular to receive training in urban guerrilla warfare techniques from fellow fighters who had been blooded in the Iraqi insurgency. This involved learning how to conduct intelligence gathering operations, developing sharp-shooting skills, creating suicide squads as well as refining skills in building Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), the roadside bombs that have claimed to many American soldiers' lives.

The 2006 spring and summer offensive had finally been implemented with more than 30 foreign soldiers killed in action so far, most of them American.

The US military has stepped up operations in recent weeks to stem what's been described as the worst Taliban violence since the hardline regime were ousted in 2001 for refusing to give up al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Al-Zawahiri also used the period from 2005 to 2006 to hone a strategy to lure the Americans out of their bases and bring their battle into the region of Balad-i-Khurasan, which would be the beginning of the Osama bin Laden's call for the liberation of the “Arabian Penunsula”.

In the name of Allah, and all praise is due to Allah.
And may peace and prayers be upon the messenger of Allah.

And upon his family, companions and allies.

Muslim Brothers everywhere: May Allah's peace, mercy and blessings be upon you.

The current serious events in Gaza and Lebanon prove to every sane person that the Crusader-Zionist war does not respect any ties or kinship.

Nobody cared about the 10, 000 prisoners in Israel’s prisons while the world went into uproar over three Israeli soldiers.

The war with Israel is not about a treaty, a ceasefire agreement, Sykes-Picot borders, national zeal or disputed borders.

It is rather a jihad for the sake of Allah until the religion of Allah is established. It is jihad for the liberation of Palestine, all of Palestine, as well as every land that was a home for Islam, from Andalusia to Iraq.

The whole world is an open field for us. As they attack us everywhere, we will attack them everywhere.

As their armies got together to wage war on us, our nation will get together to fight them.
The shells and missiles that tear apart the bodies of Muslims in Gaza and Lebanon are not purely Israeli.

Rather, they come from and are financed by all countries of the Crusader alliance.

Thus, all those who took part in the crime should pay the price.

We cannot just stand idly by in humiliation while we see all these shells fall on our brothers in Gaza and Lebanon.

How can we remain silent while we are the sons of Abu-Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Hamzah, Ja'far, Ali, Al-Husayn, Sa'd, Khalid, Talhah, Al-Zubayr, Ikrimah, Salah-al-Din, Yusuf Bin-Tahfin, and Muhammad al-Fatih.

We are the sons of those who fought the apostates, conquered the world, moved the people from the darkness of polytheism to the light of monotheism and from worshipping slaves to worshipping the God of slaves, put out the fire of the Magians and conquered Constantinople.

We are back to the field again, with the favour of Allah.

About a year before the two raids of New York and Washington the leader, Abu-Has (may Allah have mercy on his soul),
gave a lecture to a group of trainees about Palestine and the Muslims' conditions in Qandahar.

At the end of the lecture the hero, Muhammad Attah (may Allah have mercy on his soul) stood up and asked the leader with seriousness and enthusiasm "what is the way to defeat the attack on Palestine?" and America knows very well the rest of the story.

The Ummah that produced the nineteen who shook America is able with the assistance of Allah to produce double that number.

Dear Muslim brothers everywhere, today we must target the Jewish and the American interests everywhere.
Not only that but we must target the interest of all the countries who participated in the assault against the Muslims in Chechnya, Kashmir, Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and Lebanon. All of these governments and their people are fighting Muslims according to the Islamic Shari'a.

I do not wish to mover your feelings with an over-zealous speech or with an emotional address. But I ask you by Allah Almighty;
by your lover for Allah's messenger, may Allah's peace and blessings upon him;
and by the obligation of jihad,
which is a duty on every Muslim,
to rise and seek martyrdom to hurt the Crusaders and the Zionists.

The events that are taking place now show the significance of the two jihad fronts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

All Muslims must support them in order to drive out the forces of America from them, paralysed and powerless,
and push them back to their country, make them pay the price for their aggression against the Muslims and support for Israel.

Iraq is characterised by its proximity to Palestine.
The Muslims must support its muhihidin so that a mujahid Islamic emirate can be established there which can, with the will of Allah, move jihad to the borders of Palestine.

Then, the mujahidin inside and outside of Palestine can unite and the great conquest will arrive, Allah willing.

The martyr Imam- as we consider him - Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has said "In Iraq we are very close to al-Aqsa Mosque of the Messenger of Allah, so we fight in Iraq and our eyes are on Jerusalem which can only be restored by the guiding Qur'an and sword of victory."

Perhaps, the events of the Crusader-Zionist aggression on the Muslims may push the traitors in Iraq to end their disgrace and treason and stop justifying and supporting the US-Crusader presence in Iraq.

O my Muslim nation, it has become known to you without doubt that the governments of the Arab and Muslim states are not only helpless but also involved in collusion against you.

The institutions are paralysed and defeatist and you are left in the field alone.

Put your trust in Allah and do not but rely on Him. Battle your enemy, the worshippers of the world, with death-loving weapons.

Almighty Allah says: "Then fight in Allah's cause - Thou are held responsible only for thyself - and rouse the believers.

It may be that Allah will restrain the fury of the Unbelievers; for Allah is the strongest in might and in punishment."

As for you, the oppressed and wronged people in the world, the victims of the Western oppressive civilisation led by America:
Stand by Muslims in the face of this injustice which humanity has never witnessed before.

Support us as we are supporting you against injustice and tyranny that was forbidden by Allah in His book:

"The blame is only against those who oppress men and wrongdoing and insolently transgress beyond bounds through the land,
defying rights and justice; for such there will be a penalty grievous."

Stand by us so that rights can be returned to their owners and the symbol of injustice in the history of human beings collapse.

And our Final prayer is that all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds,
and may Allah send prayers and peace upon our master Mohammed and his family and companions.

An interesting departure from past practice, which for Al Qaeda has been to leave the fight against Israel to an almost surprising degree to others, like Hamas and Hezbollah. We will see if this is just a propaganda move to cash on the feelings aroused in many parts of the Muslim world by recent events in Lebanon, or if the near future will bring Al Qaeda led or inspired fighters to Lebanon, Gaza or the West Bank to carry out terrorist operations.

I have read it many times now with no foreign language in the background, no images behind al-Zawahiri no expressions and body language. I think it is one of the clearest messages ever from al Qaeda.

JIHADI INTIFADA: QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

In his message of February 12, 2007, Ayman al-Zawahiri, the No.2 to Osama bin Laden, has spoken of a global Jihadi Intifada. Has he spoken of any special areas of focus for this Intifada?

Whenever he talks of a global jihad or now of a global Jihadi Intifada, Zawahiri makes it clear that this has to cover all lands in the world, which rightfully belong to Islam. After saying so, he specifies certain areas, which he thinks should receive special attention first. Of these, he gives the topmost priority to Afghanistan and Iraq. He says the future of Islam and of the global Intifada itself will be decided in those countries. If they can defeat the Americans there, the jihadis' victory in the rest of the lands will be assured. After mentioning these two countries, he mentions certain other areas specifically. He believes that the victory of the jihadis in these areas would also be crucial for the ultimate victory of Islam. These areas are Palestine, including Gaza, the Lebanon, Somalia, Algeria and Chechnya in Russia. He describes Somalia as the Southern garrison of Islam and Algeria as its Western garrison.

What does he mean by Jihadi Intifada?

A kind of struggle in which the role of motivated individual Muslims will become more important than that of organisations so that the weakening or collapse of an organisation does not result in a collapse of the Intifada. He wants the Intifada to acquire a momentum of its own as a result of the sacrifices of individual Muslims. He said in his message of January 22, 2007: "Every Muslim today is directly responsible for defending Islam, Islam’s homeland and the Islamic Ummah and he is responsible for the efforts to liberate the Muslim captives foremost of whom is Sheikh Omar Abdl al-Rahman from the prisons of the crusaders and their helpers and we reaffirm to the families of the Guantanamo captives who are demonstrating these days in Cuba, that we –with God’s permission-- have not and will not forget our captives and that their liberation is a debt on our necks and that the Americans must expect to pay the price for everything they have done to them." The importance of a central command and control in keeping the Intifada going is down-played. The motivation of individual Muslims is more important than any centralised command and control. He also projects the Intifada as a mix of military and non-military struggles. He says in his message of December 20, 2006: "We must bear arms. And if we are unable to bear them, then we must support those who carry them. This support comes in many forms and guises, so we must exploit all Da’wah, student and union activities to back the Jihadi resistance....... The Muslim Ummah must exploit all methods of popular protest, like demonstrations, sit-ins, strikes, refusing to pay taxes, preventing cooperation with the security forces, refusing to provide the Crusaders with fuel, hitting traders who supply the Crusader forces, boycotting Crusader and Jewish products, and other ways of popular protest."

How does he visualise the Intifada of his conception developing in Palestime, including Gaza?

His disenchantment with the PLO, Al Fatah and the Hamas is obvious. He asks the Palestinians to take over the responsibility for the Intifada in their own hands. He says in his latest message of February 12, 2007: "The Muslims in the area should work for the establishment of an Islamic state in Palestine, instead of supporting an individual faction or political party. I'm not asking them to join HAMAS, Islamic Jihad or al-Qaida, but rather, I'm asking them to return to Islam, in order to fight for the establishment of an Islamic state over all of Palestine, and not for the establishment of a secularist state which will please America on crumbs of Palestine."

What has he to say about the Lebanon?

He wants the Palestinians as well as the Muslims of the Lebanon to categorically reject all UN Resolutions and international agreements relating to these lands of Islam. He tells the Lebanese people in his latest message: "I ask my brothers in Islam and Jihad in Lebanon not to give in to Resolution 1701, nor accept the pushing back of the Lebanese border 30 kilometers, nor accept the presence of the international Crusader forces in the south as a barrier between them and Occupied Palestine, even if that resolution is agreed to by all official political forces licensed by the Lebanese government, on the basis of international balances and foreign connections."

What has he to say about Somalia?

In his message of December 20, 2006, Zawahiri said: "Brothers in Islam and Jihad in Somalia: know that you are on the southern garrison of Islam, so don’t allow Islam to be attacked from your flank, and know that we are with you, and that the entire Muslim Ummah is with you. So don’t lose heart, or fall into despair, for you must dominate if you are true in faith. And know that you are fending off the same Crusade which is fighting your brothers in Islam in Chechnya, Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and Lebanon. So be resolute, be patient and be optimistic, for by Allah beside whom there is no other god, even if your enemies possess thousands of tons of iron and explosives, in their
chests lie the hearts of mice. So be severe against them like Muhammad was. "

What has he to say about Algeria?

In his message of December 20, 2006, he said: "And I also send my greetings and those of my brothers to our steadfast brothers in Algeria in the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, the guards of Islam’s western garrison. I ask Allah to accept their sacrifices, perseverance and resoluteness, to send down on them His victory which He promised His believing worshippers, and to conquer with them His enemies, the Crusaders and secularist sons of France. And I give them the good news that the winds of victory are blowing, that the Ummah has risen up, and that the era of humiliation has come to a close. So stand firm."

Why this increased interest in Algeria?

Partly to bring about the rule of the Sharia in Algeria and partly to use Algeria as a rear base for spreading the Intifada to France, Spain and Portugal. The Al Qaeda and the International Islamic Front have been using the Afghanistan-Pakistan region as a rear base for their Jihadi Intifada against the US and the UK. It has not been possible to use it as a rear base against France, Spain and Portugal. They are hoping that an active Jihadi Intifada in Algeria will help in overcoming this deficiency.

What does he say of Chechnya?

He said in his message of December 20, 2006: "And I send my greetings and those of my brothers to the Chechen people, in Jihad against the Russian Crusade for 400 years. O sons of Imam Shamil, know that you are not alone in confronting the Crusade against Islam. You are at the throats of the Russians and their helpers, and we are at the throats of the Americans and Jews and their followers. So stand firm."

How is the anti-Shia violence in Iraq projected to the Ummah?

Al Qaeda has been trying to remove the impression that it is anti-Shia. It is being said in its propaganda that the anti-Shia attacks in Iraq are not because they are Shias, but because they are collaborators of the US occupation forces.

Why the repeated calls to the Muslims of the world to follow the command of Mulla Mohammad Omar, the Amir of the Taliban?

It is part of Al Qaeda's efforts to remove the impression that Wahabi Arabs have been in the forefront of the Jihadi Intifada. It has been trying to emphasis that all Muslims are in the Intifada irrespective of their ethnic origin or nationality. He says in his latest message: "Nationalists split the Muslim Ummah into Arabs, Persians, Kurds, Turks, Afghans and others, then split the Arabs into Egyptians, Moroccans, Syrians, Iraqis, Lebanese, Saudis, Yemenis and others and thus provided the best possible service to the crusade invading the Islamic world and instead of the Ummah uniting to confront the colonialist campaign, as it previously united to face the crusade and Mongol invasions, the Ummah fell apart and fought itself." There is an attempt to give Mulla Omar an iconic status as a non-Arab commander of the Jihadi Intifada.

Does it indicate an eclipse of Osama bin Laden?

Not necessarily. However, there has been no reference to the role bin Laden in this global Jihadi Intifada.

Where does India figure in this?

There has been no substantive reference to India in the recent statements of Al Qaeda leaders and activists. However, there are references in passing to the Muslims of Jammu and Kashmir, but hardly any reference to the Muslims in other parts of India. The last substantive reference to India was in a message of bin Laden disseminated in April, 2006, in the wake of President George Bush's visit to India. In that message, bin Laden had characterised the global jihad as directed against the joint conspiracy of the Crusaders, the Jewish people and the Hindus against Islam. This characterisation has not been repeated recently. The last two messages of Zawahiri (January 22, 2007, and February 12, 2007) are free of references to India or even J&K.

How about Pakistan and Gen. Pervez Musharraf?

In 2002, Al Qaeda propaganda was free of anti-Pakistan and anti-Musharraf references. In 2003, it started a virulent campaign against Pakistan as well as Musharraf. This was particularly so after the arrest of Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, who allegedly orchestrated the 9/11 terrorist strikes in the US, by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) from a house in Rawalpindi in March, 2003, and his handing-over to the US. This anti-Pakistan and anti-Musharraf campaign continued in 2004 and 2005. This has been considerably toned down since the Neo Taliban started its offensive in Afghanistan in 2006, from sanctuaries in Pakistani territory, with the complicity of the Musharraf regime. In his message of December 20, 2006, Zawahiri has characterised the rulers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan as traitors to Islam for collaborating with the US. Musharraf's name did not figure in that list.

Any other significant point?

Al Qaeda propaganda continues to maintain a discreet silence on the execution of Saddam Hussein by the Iraqi authorities on December 29, 2006, and on the US campaign against Iran on the nuclear issue.

“Palestine is our concern and the concern of every Muslim”

In the name of God, praise be to God, and peace and prayers be upon the messenger of God, his household, companions, and followers. O Brother Muslims everywhere, may God's peace, mercy, and blessings be upon you.

I speak to you at a time when the Crusader onslaught against the countries of Islam is escalating. With the grace of God, Muslims are moving from one victory to another, while the Crusaders are facing one failure after the other. Dick Cheney came to ask Musharraf to show him what he did in return for the bribes he had taken. Musharraf bowed and begged him in Islamabad. As for Taliban, who bow their head only to God in prayers, received him well in Bagram.

Tony Blair continued to deceive his people. He made them believe that he would achieve victory with the 1,400 British soldiers that he would send to Afghanistan. I remind him that Dr Brydon returned to India after leaving behind him more than 16,000 dead in Afghanistan. Send your troops, and we will send to you, with the help of God. Incite and we will incite and mobilize troops and we will mobilize our forces, with the help of God. God is the best supporter.

The Crusader series of plotting continues. The UN courts have acquitted the Serbian Government of killing 100,000 Muslims and Croatians in Bosnia, while they demand the conviction of 52 defendants in Darfur. I am not defending the Sudanese Government, as everyone who committed a crime in Darfur must pay the price for it. But I ask two questions. The firs question is: Who gave the killers the right to appoint judges to interfere in the affairs of Muslims? By what right the Security Council interferes in the affairs of Muslims and forms courts, which acquit this and convict that, while the hands of their criminals are stained with Muslims' blood in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Algeria, Chechnya, and East Turkestan? How does America refer the Darfur case to an international court which it does not recognize and refuses to be subject to it? What injustice is governing this world.

The second question is: If you want to try those who term criminals in Darfur, who will try the criminals in Bosnia, Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Chechnya, Kashmir, Indonesia, Philippines, and East Turkestan? Who will try Bush, Blair, Putin, and Sharon? Who will try the villains who are shedding our blood and violating our sanctities on a daily basis, which is many times more than what was committed in Darfur? Who will try Mubarak, Al Sa'ud, Bouteflika, Zine El Abidine, and Bin-al-Husayn, and Musharraf? O the law of the jungle, the civilization of wolves, and the United Nations of criminal s tates, the Muslims have suffered enough at your hands. Muslims have sought the help of God and decided to confront you.

The Crusader plotting continues in Iraq. They decided to hold a conference in it in a bid to strike a deal to facilitate the exit of the Crusaders. As I said before, the Americans are not negotiating with the real forces in the Islamic world. Some mass media distorted my statements by saying that I call for negotiations. I have not called and will not call for negotiations. I am just describing the confused and deteriorating situation of the Americans. Shaykh Usama Bin Ladin had proposed to them a truce and they rejected it. Let them bear the consequences of their rejection.

The series of Zionist-Crusader deception in Palestine continues. Israel attacks the sanctuary of Al-Aqsa Mosque, while the so-called governments of Arab and Islamic countries have no choice but shout and denounce. The Jews knew the real value (of the Arab and Islamic governments) after most of them recognized Israel or showed willingness to do so, as Abdallah Bin-Abd-al-Aziz did in his initiative, which was dictated to him by the Jew Thomas Friedman, and which Arabs beg Israel to accept.

Unfortunately, a different kind of aggression is going on in Palestine. The HAMAS Movement's leadership has transgressed on the rights of the Muslim nation and agreed to what it called respecting the international agreements, thus ridiculing Muslims' minds and sentiments.

I am sorry to face the Muslim nation with the truth, and to tell it please accept our condolences for (the loss) of the HAMAS leadership. It has fallen in the swamp of capitulation. In the past, at the time of Al-Nakbah , Hasan al-Banna, whom we pray God would regard as a martyr, and Shaykh Amin al-Husayni, may God have mercy on their souls, gathered the fedayeen groups and marched toward Palestine. Now, at the time of the deal, the HAMAS leadership is handing over to the Jews most of Palestine.

In our childhood, we used to memorize the poem of Hashim Rashid to his son:

Hayfa is wailing, so have you heard the wailing of Hayfa?


Today, however, HAMAS leadership will teach it to their students, saying:

Haifa is wailing, so do not be alarmed by the wail of Haifa;
sell her for a third of the cabinet wrongly and unfairly,
and bear witness to that beside the house with falsehood;
sell her as a guest in the palace of the traitor and broker;
sell her to win the affection of America and get close to it;
Al-Sadat sold her and became a role model for us to follow;
blessed be who follows his treason and leads to the path;
sell her even if the wounds of the freeman run red;
sell her even if the martyr paints the horizon with hi blood;
sell her and do not allow Al-Qassam to bomb, for he has been dead for a long time;
let the sadness of a widow emaciate her body;
get up and sell your weapon and buy a drum and tambourine,
and dance with them in the parade of lies,
and hold a demonstration in solidarity with the spy;
forget about Haifa for she will die;
sell her and sign your name;
Hayfa is like Spain.

The HAMAS leadership has finally joined the train of Al Sadat for humiliation and capitulation. The HAMAS leadership has sold out Palestine, and earlier it had sold out referring to Shari'ah as the source of jurisdiction. It has sold all that to be allowed to maintain one-third of the government.

And what kind of government is this that does not have control over entry or exit, and movement between its two parts without a permit from Israel? It is a government whose prime minister is not allowed to enter his homeland and is not allowed to do so unless the Egyptians mediate between him and the Israeli defense minister. He would stay outside in the cold in front of the Rafah crossing until the Israeli minister gives approval.

For the sake of retaining one third of the seats in this ridiculous government, HAMAS leadership has abandoned the rule of Shar'iah. It has also ceded most of the Palestinian territories. For one-third of the seats of this ridiculous government, they abandoned the resistance movement and accepted the government of bargaining; they abandoned the movement of martyrdom operations and accepted the government of respect for international resolutions; they abandoned the heroic struggler movement and accepted the domesticated beggar government; they abandoned the movement of penetrating the enemy throngs with explosives and accepted the government of playing with words in the halls of palaces. For a third of the seats in t he government, they abandoned the rule of Shari'ah and bowed to the international legitimacy.

The HAMAS leadership shows contempt for the minds and sentiments of Muslims, saying that it will respect, and not commit itself to, international resolutions.

O sensible and honorable people, what is the difference between committing oneself to international resolutions and respecting them? Is it not the same difference between submissiveness and servility, defeat and withdrawal, between retreat and concession, and between lying on someone's stomach and throwing oneself to the ground? This is nothing but a play with words, which does not exist in the dictionary of jihad, steadfastness, holding fast to God's orders, and fighting for the sake of religion and honor.

It is surprising that they have failed even in playing (with words). Respect has a higher rank than commitment. Someone can commit themselves to something reluctantly, but he who respects shows high esteem for what they respect.

And this is from God's desertion of them. The commander of the faithful, our master Ali Bin Abi-Talib, may God be pleased with him, said: If God's help is not with somebody, they will be hurt most by his own judgment. How painful was the stand taken by the prime minister when he acquiesced to Mahmud Abbas, the top man of the United States, to charge him to form a government which submits to the resolutions of presenting Palestine to the Jews. He responds by saying that he will comply with the letter of designation and act accordingly. That means that he will relinquish most of Palestine to the Jews like what others did.

O sensible people, why is all this backtracking in front of the US plan while the United States is being defeated in Afghanistan and Iraq, groaning because of the blows of the mujahidin, and searching for an escape? Why are they backtracking while the mujahidin are advancing toward Palestine rapidly? Why are they backtracking when there is a jihadist awakening that has shaken the Ummah to the core and revitalized it?

The serious lesson for all of us in this blunder is that doctrinal deviation has facilitated behavioral deviation. When it has become easy for them to abandon Al-Shari'ah, it has become even easier for them to relinquish most of Palestine.

My brother Muslims, it is, with absolute frankness, the US plan to wind down the Islamic Jihadist resistance through the Crusader-Zionist expedition. The United States has realized that it must solve the issue of Palestine nominally or rather farcically in order to remove one of the biggest reasons for the Muslims' hatred for it. The HAMAS's leadership accepted, through the policies of starvation, siege, murder, haggling, and temptation with scraps of power to go along to this plot. Hence, it took a ride with the US devil and its Saudi representative; however, it forgot that whoever takes a ride with the devil becomes a loser.

God says: "Satan makes them promises, and creates in them false desires; but Satan's promises are nothing but deception."

Those who spread lies will say about us that we do not want to spare the Palestinian lives, and do not want the Palestinian unity. But we say to them: what do sparing Palestinian blood and Palestinian unity have to do with selling Palestine out? Reach agreements -- if you would like -- to spare the Palestinian lives but do not reach agreements on selling out Palestine. Or was the call for sparing the Palestinian blood used as a cover for peddling the selling of Palestine? Or was the aggression of Fatah, which is supported by US funds and Egyptian weapons, against you has obliged you to submit to its will?

Those who spread lies will say: "Palestine is not of your business." We say to them: This is amazing. You invite all the enemies of Islam, including the Quartet, the United Nations, the European Union, and even the agent governorates in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf, and Jordan, to interfere in the affairs of Palestine and you prohibit the Mujahidin to do so?

Palestine is verily our business and the business of every Muslim, and we will not abandon it. Palestine was a land of Islam and it is individual duty for every Muslim to liberate it.

That martyr of Islam, Abdallah Azzam, May God's mercy be upon him, said: Jihad is the individual duty of the entire Islamic nation and the entire Islamic nation is sinful because it has not liberated Andalusia, Bukhara, Palestine, and Afghanistan. And Jihad remains an individual duty until all Islamic spots return to the hands of Muslims. May God's mercy be upon you all, Abdallah Azzam. Praise be to God who granted you martyrdom lest you see those whom you praised while they are entering aboard the US tanks and lest you see the leadership of HAMAS joining the train of Al Sadat and Arafat.


My Muslim nation: This is the fruit of secular democracy, and the fruit of elections under occupation and under the authority of the secular constitutions: Surrender, concessions, and admission of the legitimacy of Israel. Therefore, I tell my brothers, the brothers of steadfastness, martyrdom, and jihad in Palestine, that they are mujahidin for the cause of God, and that they should renounce the international resolutions which handed over Palestine over to the Jews.

They should not respect those resolutions; rather, they should disdain, denounce, and renounce those resolutions. They should continue their jihad for the sake of God until every Muslim land invaded by the infidels, from Andalusia to Iraq, is liberated, and until the word of God has the upper hand and the caliphate is restored to protect Islam and spread its way. I appeal to them to work according to the Koran, stick to their trenches, and be proud of their rifles. They should not allow anybody to sell those rifles in the market of politics, whereby they would lose both the religion and life.

I appeal to all my Muslim brothers to set themselves free from the shackles of the organizations leading them into the mazes of politics. They should know that their affiliation with Islam is higher, more sublime, and more worthy than their affiliation with any group or organization. The groups that have chosen to reconcile with the hireling governments and work in accordance with their constitutions and laws will continue to revolve in a closed circle, and will move from one concession to another. Despite all this, the wolves of the Crusader campaign will not be satisfied with them.

In this vein, the Egyptian Government has regarded it as excessive for the youths of the Al-Azhar University to perform a sports show, while the armies of the Crusaders and Jews are desecrating our land in Chechnya, Kashmir, Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, and Somalia. They regarded as excessive for the youths to perform a sports show, for they want the nation to be herds of sheep, driven to the slaughterhouse one after another.

The Egyptian Government is pouncing on those who recognized the legitimacy of its president, constitution, and laws. It is pouncing on those who accepted the rule of the majority of voters, and renounced the rule of Shari'ah. It is pouncing on those who accepted citizenship and abandoned and renounced the brotherhood of Islam.

It is pouncing on those who accepted the national state and abandoned the state of the caliphate. It is pouncing on those who denounced jihad and mujahidin and obeyed the false secular law. It is pouncing on those who said they will not go to jihad until their governments give them permission; that is, until the United states and Israel give them such permission. It is pouncing on those who said that jihad is only sanctioned against the foreign enemy only.

Yet, we found them cooperating with and joining the foreign Crusader occupation forces and entering Kabul and Baghdad aboard foreign, Crusader, US tanks. We found them in Palestine accepting one-third of the government in return for conceding most of Palestine and the rule of Shari'ah, thus losing the last pretext that they are still fighting the foreign enemy. The Egyptian government pounced on them despite all their concessions, which neither interceded for them with it, nor with the United States and Israel. This is because whoever goes for a ride with devil must come back a loser. God says: Never will the Jews or the Christians be satisfied with thee unless thou follow their form of religion.

O Muslim brothers in the fields of jihad, in Algeria, Somalia, Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya, and everywhere, confront -- by holding tightly to your faith and to your resolve and steadfastness -- the Zionist-Crusader plot, which is reeling, with the power of God, under your blows. And rejoice at the stateme nt of the Prophet, may peace be upon him: A party from nation will continue to fight for the truth and victorious until the Day of Judgment.

As for Palestine, which has been burdened with plots and conspiracies, where those who used to claim to defend it have fled from holding onto it, I borrow for it verses composed by my steadfast brother Abu-Hafs al-Muaritani, may God preserve him, who says:

The children of Islam are but noblemen, who were
Exhausted and wasted by the tragedy of your loss,
But despite the wounds, their certainty about the
Return of the caliphate's glories increases,
And that the solutions of the traitors are but
Scattered dust on the path of jihad,
And they have sworn by God that their jihad
Shall continue, even if Khusrav and Caezar resist.

And our last prayer is that all praise is due to God, and may peace and prayers be upon our master Muhammad, and his family and companions.

Al-Zawahiri slams Musharraf in tape

ISLAMABAD: In a rare English-language message partially aired yesterday that is believed to be from Al-Qaeda's No. 2 leader, Ayman Al-Zawahiri claimed Pakistan is now "virtually ruled from the American Embassy". The Pakistani ARY channel gave a copy of the tape, whose authenticity could not immediately be verified, to AP. However, an AP reporter who has reviewed his past recordings said the voice sounds like that of Al-Zawahiri.

It is not clear when the tape was made, but it includes apparently recent pictures of ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and others in the ruling coalition, indicating it was created after the February election that brought President Pervez Musharraf's foes to power. Both Al-Zawahiri and Osama bin Laden are believed to be hiding in the rugged and lawless region along the Afghan-Pakistan border.

Earlier this month, CBS News reported it had obtained a copy of an intercepted letter from unnamed sources in Pakistan that urgently requested a doctor to treat Al-Zawahiri. A spokesman for a top Taleban leader in Pakistan denied the report. In the tape aired yesterday, Al-Zawahiri lists a litany of charges against Musharraf, who he says has betrayed Muslims by supporting the US after the Sept 11, 2001 attacks in its battle against the Taleban in Afghanistan.

Pervez has insulted and compromised Pakistan's sovereignty by allowing the CIA and FBI to operate freely in Pakistan and arrest, interrogate, torture, deport and detain any person, whether Pakistani or not, for as long as they like, thus turning the Pakistani army and security agencies into hunting dogs in the contemporary crusade," said the purported tape from Al-Zawahiri. Much of the hour-long address is an appeal to Pakistani soldiers to rethink their role in the fighting that has often pitted them ag
ainst their countrymen, especially in the tribal regions.

Al-Zawahiri also mentions last year's deadly military siege of Islamabad's radical Red Mosque - an incident that militants have often used to rally support for their cause. "Every soldier and officer should absolutely disobey any order to kill Muslims or aid their killers," says Al-Zawahiri, who also singled out Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani as a "hostile enemy of Islam". He urged Pakistanis to rise up and fight the United States or at least support the insurgents.

The tape carries the logo of Al-Sahab, Al-Qaeda's media arm and, though in English, also has English subtitles and sometimes Arabic ones. It was delivered to ARY by a man on a motorbike yesterday, according to Faizullah Khan, a reporter for the channel. It not only features static images, but also includes clips of interviews Musharraf has given, footage of him giving speeches and other video segments.

The Egyptian-born Al-Zawahiri is a doctor by training and speaks English. In the tape he talks precisely and clearly, though with an Egyptian accent. He apologizes for speaking "the language of the Muslims' enemies" but notes he does not speak the "charming" Pakistani Urdu language and that most Pakistanis do not know Arabic.

The tape's release comes amid US pressure on the Pakistani government to do more to eliminate Taleban and Al-Qaeda fighters in its tribal regions bordering Afghanistan, areas considered militant sanctuaries. The main ruling parties, however, have been caught up in internal political battles, including disputes over what to do with Musharraf. Last week, the ruling parties announced they had agreed to seek to impeach the president, ramping up the pressure on him to resign. Musharraf, who took power in a 199
9 military coup and dominated Pakistan for years, has been largely sidelined since the February elections but has shown no intention of stepping down.

Meanwhile, Musharraf was under mounting pressure to quit, with his allies joining ruling coalition calls for him to go before impeachment proceedings begin today. "Musharraf should step down before the start of the impeachment proceedings, because the country cannot afford confrontation anymore," Sardar Bahadur Khan, an MP from Musharraf's main ally, the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) told AFP. Khan said more than 25 MPs from the PML-Q wanted Musharraf to resign.

Coalition leader "(Asif Ali) Zardari has offered safe exit to Musharraf," he revealed. "The president should avail the opportunity to make an honorable exit," he said, adding that a resignation would be "good for the nation and strengthen the democratic system". Senior officials from the ruling coalition also advised the president to step down, saying he would not be able to fight the charges being lodged against him.

The call was made as a government committee met to finalize a charge sheet against Musharraf before the lower house starts impeachment proceedings, lawmakers in the governing coalition said. Coalition leaders Zardari - the widower of slain former premier Benazir Bhutto - and former premier Nawaz Sharif announced Thursday that they would seek Musharraf's ouster for allegedly mismanaging the country. "Cracks are visible in the PML-Q," Information Minister Sherry Rehman said. "Musharraf is losing support ever
y day," she told reporters, adding that the committee had collected enough material against Musharraf.

The committee will have another session today to finalise the charge sheet, Rehman said after yesterday's meeting. "It will be a historic motion. It will have solid points against Musharraf." Under Pakistan's constitution, impeachment requires a two-thirds majority in a joint sitting of the upper and lower houses of parliament. "A comprehensive charge sheet is being prepared," Law Minister Farooq Naek told reporters. The charges include "gross misconduct and violation of the constitution". "The charge shee
t will be solid and Musharraf will not be able to fight it," said the minister, a member of the committee drafting the charges. "It is better for him to resign before impeachment.

Naek did not provide further details, but Zardari on Thursday said "Musharraf worked to undermine the transition to democracy," and his policies "weakened the federation and eroded trust in national institutions." Ishaq Dar, a senior leader of Sharif's party, also said Musharraf should resign to avoid impeachment. "Musharraf still has time. It will be in his own interest if he resigns," Dar said. "We have far beyond the two-thirds majority, he should realise this.

Asked if the coalition would allow a safe exit for the president, he said only the coalition leadership could decide. Musharraf's close ally, Mushahid Hussain, who is also secretary general of the PML-Q, said the president could face the charges or resign. But, he said, "the president has been an army commando" and he will "dig in and fight".

People who are saying President Musharraf will resign - they are either lying or they simply don't know his nature," the embattled leader's spokesman Rashid Qureshi told AP yesterday. "President Musharraf is a man of character and no one can point a finger at him. He has a clean track record." Qureshi declined to say what course of action the president would take.

Musharraf, who seized power in a 1999 military coup, ruled nuclear-armed Pakistan relatively untroubled for several years with the backing of the United States, which has counted him as a key ally since the September 11 attacks. But his popularity slumped after he ousted the country's chief justice and imposed a state of emergency in November 2007 to prevent any challenges to his re-election as president. Musharraf later stepped down as army chief, and the parties of Bhutto and Sharif subsequently trounced
his allies in elections in February. Washington on Thursday steered clear of the impeachment proceedings, saying it was an "internal" matter for Pakistan. - Agencies

Zawahiri's English audio contains no mention of recent events in Pak such as the elimination of Abu Khabab or the heavy anti-Taliban attacks in Bajaur and Swat.

Zawahiri does say that he is in Pakistan. He might intend to flee soon, however. When he calls for chaos in Pakistan, it might mean that he intends to watch from a safe distance. He ran from Egypt and Afghanistan too, when those places got too hot for him.

Zawahiri goes on a bit about A.Q.Khan; says Khan is a scapegoat of Musharref. The video contains an American news clip in which Musharref is asked about how centrifuges and such stuff got smuggled out of Pakistan. In view of Zawahiri's emphasis on persuading the Pak military to come over to his side, I think Zawahiri is at least fantasizing about getting an atomic bomb from the Pak arsenal. He complains that the Pakistani nuclear arsenal is overseen by the Americans; apparently he would prefer that only Pakistanis know what is there and where it goes.

Zawahiri in several places accuses India of various anti-Muslim things, over Afghanistan and the Lal Masjid and whatnot, to ingratiate himself with the local Pakistani India-haters.

Zawahiri takes a swipe at the English language at the start of this audio. I guess Adam Gadahn wasn't in the room at the time. :)

Gadahn is a proven traitor and, as I've suggested before, rarely is a known traitor completely trusted by the side to which he defects. Maybe Gadahn will lip off at some local cave-sheikh and be killed right there and then. Maybe he will re-defect, or try to, unsuccessfully. I have seen no recent mention of, or questions about, Gadahn on the senior forums. There are some anglophone contributors though, one or another of whom could be Gadahn I suppose.

It looks pretty insignificant to me, except that we now know AZ didn't get mangled and infected in the elimination of Abu Khabab and the others (two Egyptians and a Syrian).

The ABC article makes the point that Zawahiri is divisive and uninspiring. He is. A recent example: Other AQ guys got pretty argumentative with Zawahiri when he called for the opening of the Israel-Gaza gates, not because they hate Israel, but because they hate Hamas. The AQ people are rooting for Jaish al-Islam in Gaza City -- the only competition in Gaza that Hamas has not yet eliminated.

Nowadays Zawahiri doesn't even bother to mention Iraq, where AQ has been defeated. Maybe in his next video, Zawahiri will have thought of some former ally on whom to blame his latest disappointment.

Here is the complete transcript of the statement issued by Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri to the Pakistan Army and the people of Pakistan that was released on video on August 10, 2008 that makes for serious contemplation during Ramadan, the month of Jihad.

In The Name Of Allah The Most Gracious The Most Merciful

My Muslim brothers and sisters in Pakistan – Assalam o alaikum

I want to speak to you today regarding the miserable condition to which Pakistan has deteriorated.

I have decided to speak to you today in English the thing I dislike not from a nationalistic point of view because Allah (swt) knows that we are among the fiercest enemies of nationalists and their like who believe in the Western democratic system and British political and legislative system instead of the Law of Allah (swt) to whom we ascribe all perfection and majesty and who have divided the Muslim Ummah and been the cause of some of the worst catastrophes the Ummah has faced in her modern history.

But rather I don’t like to speak in English for a number of other reasons. First of all it isn’t the language of the holy Qur’an which should be the language of communication between Muslims or at least it is not one of the languages of the Muslims which can be an alternative language of communication.

I hope that one day the Westerners embrace Islam and their language becomes part of the family of Muslim languages. But till that day comes the English language is the language of the Muslims Enemies who have occupied their lands, forcibly implanted Israel in their midst, looted their resources, tortured, deported and killed them and aided supported and enforced the corrupt tyrant regimes which are sucking our blood. And replacing our divine Shariah with man made laws

It is the language which we didn’t choose but are forced to use due to our weakness and dependency.

Secondly it is not my mother tongue through which I am able to express my ideas in the best possible manner keeping in mind that the Arabic language is considered to be one of the richest, broadest and most beautiful languages on earth

But unfortunately most of you don’t understand the Arabic language and sadly I am unable to speak in Urdu that charming language otherwise I wouldn’t hesitate to speak in it.

Therefore and in spite of all that I have mentioned I have decided to speak to you today in English in order to communicate directly with you and draw your attention as much as I can to the imminent and grave dangers which are facing Pakistan

So from the start I beg your pardon for my weak English language which I have only partially mastered.

The second thing I wish to beg your pardon for is that for me and for all my brothers who have lived in Pakistan for some time it is difficult to remain detached and neutral on issues relating to Pakistan because we have a deep emotional and sentimental relationship with this land and its peoples.

All of us have enjoyed the warm welcome and the caring attitude of most Pakistanis which has been so evident during the current crusade being carried out in Pakistan by Pervez and his hunting dogs in compliance with the orders of their masters in Washington.

And for me personally Pakistan is an old love from childhood days because my grandfather professor Abd-ul-Wahab Azzam was a great lover of Allama Iqbal (may Allah be pleased with him).

He was the first to translate his poems into Arabic poetry and among his many books was one about Allama Iqbal.

I read that book and much of his Arabic translations of Paim-e-mashriq, Armaghan-e-Hijaz, Zarb e Kaleem and other divans early on in my life and as I grew up Pakistan represented for me as well as many millions of Muslims a hope and a dream of establishing a strong independent Muslim government after the colonial era.

I came face to face with that hope in reality in the summer of 1980 when I came to Pakistan for the first time to treat the Afghan Muhajireen and Mujahideen and from that time until I along with thousands of other sincere Muslims supporting the Afghan jihad was forced to leave Pakistan at the behest of the Crusader Americans in the early nineties.

I stayed no less than six years in Pakistan mostly in Peshawar that charming city which I still admire greatly and during my time there I came to know its ins and outs like any real Peshawarite.

Throughout that time I like thousands of my brothers mixed thoroughly with Pakistan society and I was blessed to have at that time some fine Pakistani friends and brothers whom I hope still remember me today.

As I said before I came into actual contact with what I considered to be a hope and by living in Pakistan I was given the opportunity by the grace of Allah (swt) to develop a deep understanding of the complex goods and evils of Pakistan.

Moreover I was able to compare the common powers and ills of many different Muslim societies and after all those years and experiences I still consider Pakistan to represent a hope and a bastion for the establishment of a strong independent Muslim country not only in the post colonial era but also in the face of the contemporary Zionist Crusader campaign.

This hope is not based on the so called theory of Pakistan which has now vanished particularly after the engagement of the Pakistan Army and Security Agencies in the American war against Islam and the massacre of the red mosque. Rather it is based on my belief that there are millions of Muslims in Pakistan ready to sacrifice all that can be sacrificed for the victory of Islam

When I was living in Pakistan it was difficult for me to imagine that one day we would be thrown out of Pakistan and that the liberators of Afghanistan and the defenders of Pakistan would overnight be declared the so called terrorists and pursued in every nook and cranny of the country.

To this day there lies next to the border gate of Torkham a silent graveyard containing the remains of approx 200 Arab mujahideen and standing as a living material witness to how the rulers of the so called Islamic republic of Pakistan betrayed their Muslim brothers who inflicted no harm on Pakistan and committed no sin other than sacrificing their souls for the sake of Allah to liberate Afghanistan and protect the borders of Pakistan.

After that, life taught me to be more realistic and I stumbled upon the bitter reality that these greedy rulers were not only prepared to betray their Muslim brothers and deport them from Pakistan but were also prepared to kill and arrest their innocent and cooperative Muslim neighbours and to help and support the neo-crusaders in occupying their lands bombing and burning their villages and overthrowing their honest Islamic emirate and replacing it with a corrupt anti Pakistan puppet regime made up of traitors and drug traffickers many of whom are loyal to India and Russia. And not only that but they are also prepared to kill their own citizens and demolish their houses over the heads of their women and children.

They are even prepared to destroy mosques and madrassas and kill thousands of male and female students just to appease and please their masters who pay them, the neo-crusaders in the White House.

This greedy gang worships its salaries, benefits and bribes and if you pay them enough they are prepared to do whatever you would like them to do however dirty it might be and not in the dark or behind the scenes but in the full light of day in uniform and under the motto Faith, Taqwa (Allah Fearing) and Jihad in Allah’s path.

Therefore my message today to every Pakistani Muslim sincere in his love for Islam and his Prophet (pbuh) is to rise up to his religion and moral responsibility and to ask himself specific serious crucial questions:

1. Is the Pakistan army an army defending Muslims or merely a security service agency or a band of mercenaries which kills Muslims to please those who pay it, the new crusaders in the white house? And what do these American masters really think of the Pakistan army?

2. Can any Pakistani serving in such an army or directly contributing to his Governments criminal role in the modern anti Islam crusade the so called ‘war on terror’ really be a sincere Muslim or is he simply an enemy of Islam violating the fundamental principles of Qur’an and Sunnah?

3. Does anything by the name of the theory of Pakistan still exist? Or has it drowned in the innocent blood spilled in the name of the war of terror or perhaps been crushed under the ruins of the Red Mosque?

Regarding the first question it is evident that for years the Pakistan Army’s primary duty has been to take part both directly as well as indirectly in the killing of Muslims from Kabul to Islamabad. It has through the orders of its greedy commanding officers been transformed into any army which instead of acting as the defender of the Ummah is in fact posing the greatest of dangers to the dignity, safety and property of Muslims in South Asia and the Middle East and is even threatening the very existence of Pakistan.

General Abidzaid: “This is a battle of moderation against extremism. It is one that we got to fight and Pakistan has shown immense courage in doing that. The Pakistani armed forces have moved into an area where the extremists where openly operating in Waziristan”

Just compare the practices of the Pakistan Army with its famous motto: Iman, Taqwa and Jihad for the sake of Allah and you will discover that the writing of such a motto on army buildings is nothing more than a silly joke.

Let me my brothers and sisters remind you here of just some of the crimes committed by Pervez and his bribe seeking gang against Muslims inside and outside of Pakistan.

Pervez has proven himself to be one of the biggest enemies of Islam in Pakistan.
He declared in his first statement after his takeover of the presidency as he hugged his 2 dogs that his ideal and role model is Attaturk who destroyed the Khilafah, killed the ulema, banned the hijab and forcibly imposed secularism upon Turkey.

In accordance with the orders of the neo crusaders Pervez offered all the support necessary to topple the Islamic emirate in Kabul and with that the government of Pakistan killed the hope the Muslim afghan nation fought 20 years to achieve and for which millions of Muslims and thousands of Mujahideen laid down their lives an Islamic state inside Afghanistan and with that it accomplished the old objective of America and the West which they had tried their best to realize after the Russian defeat to establish a broad based government made up of secularists, atheists, communists, warlords and agents of the west.

It was an objective which they themselves had failed to achieve despite all their attempts, but the Pakistani government was able to accomplish it for them.

Pervez has tried his best to put as many obstacles as he could in the path of the Islamic Madrassas in Pakistan and he invented a new religion devoid of Jihad, enjoining of good and forbidding evil and adherence to the rules of Shariah, a religion which he described as “enlightened moderation” thus presenting a new American sponsored Qadyaneiah to revive the old British sponsored one.

Almighty Allah says “Who then is more unjust than he who forges a lie against Allah that he should lead astray men without knowledge? Surely Allah does not guide the unjust”

And Allama Iqbal says ‘He may change the Kaba into a Magian fire home if he wishes or may install the European Idol in it if he wants. He may make of Qur’an a plaything of interpretation and invent a new Shariah if he wants.’

Pervez destroyed the very grounds for the existence of Pakistan and shattered the theory of Pakistan when he joined the war on terror in which is assaulted his own Muslim people their Muslim neighbours and their supporters and when he massacred the students of the Red Mosque by demolishing it over their heads.

Lest we forget dividing Pakistan continues to be a permanent joint Indian American aim and the leadership of the Pakistan army has helped extensively to achieve this goal by launching military operations against the people of Pakistan.

As regards the Red mosque what did its destruction and the massacre committed within it expose? It exposed the corruption which prevails in the Pakistani military, bureaucracy and political establishment. It was and is a bleeding wound in the conscience of every free, sincere Muslim. Beneath the ruins of the Red mosque the theory of Pakistan was buried and the goal of its creation was lost and over the dead bodies of those martyrs.

The American Zionist and Indian flags were raised high. The assaults on the Red mosque and the tribal areas exposed the ugly anti-Islamic face of the military leadership of Pakistan.

In the tribal areas it partially succeeded in concealing the real crimes but in the Red Mosque the bomb’s fumes mixed with the smell of the students’ charred flesh spread to every corner of Pakistan and the massacre was covered by both the local and foreign media. The massacre of the Red Mosque exposed the ugliness and the hypocritical double standards of Western Civilization for had a single church had been attacked and a single American or Briton killed a violent wave of protest would have flared up perhaps ending with Security Council sanctions. But when the Red Mosque is stormed and those inside it are killed and the exact number of victims and even the location of their remains is concealed it is treated as nothing more than a security operation to pacify some fanatics.

The massacre at the red mosque by the Rangers, Elite Commandoes, Regular Army and agents of the ISI and Military Intelligence is a disgrace for every officer and soldier in Pakistan.

And it provokes a very serious question; is the Pakistani Army defending Islam in Pakistan and South Asia? Or attacking it for the benefit of the Muslim’s enemies? Does it represent the shield of Muslims in Pakistan or is it the criminal heir to the British Indian Army?

Pervez has seriously threatened the national security of Pakistan. Pervez is the one who fully supported the Americans in toppling the Islamic emirate in Kabul and replacing it with a regime loyal to India and hostile to Pakistan.

TV Reporter interviewing Pervez: Do you believe the Taliban must be defeated?

Pervez: Absolutely, 100%

As a result of that Indian Intelligence sneaked into the Afghan – Pakistan border region and opened its consulates in the cities adjacent to Pakistan. With the Islamic emirates departure from Kabul the Pakistani loss was two-fold. First it lost the strategic depth which Afghanistan with its high altitude terrain and mountains can afford during any confrontation with India.

Secondly the back of the Pakistani army became exposed to a hostile regime loyal to its enemies. And if you add to this the success of India in making use of air bases in Tajikistan and her efforts to expand military cooperation with the Central Asian States the extent of the strategic blunder the Pakistani army committed becomes apparent.

Pervez is the one who has put Pakistanis nuclear program in jeopardy by allowing it to fall under American surveillance thus making Pakistan’s national secrets available to Jewish and Indian intelligence. The American accusations against Abdul Qadir Khan were used as an excuse to justify that.

Interview between Musharraf and TV Reporter:

Musharraf: Today he is a hero of Pakistan because he has given us the atom bomb

TV Reporter: You arrested him?

Musharraf: Yes

TV Reporter: On what charges?

Musharraf: Umm (mumbling) – conveying national secrets, uh uh I don’t really remember the charges as such

TV Reporter: And then you pardoned him

Musharraf: Yes but kept him under house arrest

TV Reporter: House arrest? – living a life of splendour, correct?

Musharraf: He’s comfortable all right but otherwise now he doesn’t even speak on telephone

TV Reporter: Why did he do it you think?

Musharraf: the ego, satisfaction and money

However is it logical that Abdul Qadir Khan was outside the surveillance of Pakistani intelligence? Whether or not that is really the case the first ones to be tried in the Abdul Qadir khan case should be the high commands of the Pakistan Army and Intelligence with Pervez as their head.

But Abdul Qadir Khan was used as a scapegoat to appease the Americans

TV Reporter: A Q Khan shipped 2 dozen centrifuges to North Korea and 18 tonnes of material and centrifuges to Libya and Iran. How was all of this material moved without someone in the government or army finding out?

Musharraf: Well first of all bringing these centrifuges or their parts. These are not huge elements. They can be put in to your car and moved.

TV Reporter: You think he moved 18 tonnes worth of material in his car

Musharraf: Uh no no it was not done once and 18 tonnes – I don’t know where this was for Libya I think, ah eh is that correct?

TV Reporter: Libya and Iran

Musharraf: Yes. They must have been transported many times

TV Reporter: But I, we have been to your nuclear facilities enough to know that they are very heavily guarded and the military is all around them

Musharraf: Yes, Yes, the military is

TV Reporter: These are national security installations

Musharraf: Yes

TV Reporter: How was all of this stuff gotten out?

Musharraf: Ok

TV Reporter: It was sent to Iran and Libya

Musharraf: What is the military meant for? That is to safe guard them from outside attack

TV Reporter: So obviously your internal controls were a little weak

Musharraf: No they were not weak, they are very strong

TV Reporter: Except for the man who was running the operation

Musharraf: Yes of course. He tells this security man, this vehicle has to move to the airport, ok. Put it in a C130 and send it

Pervez is the one who has ignited civil war inside Pakistan by indulging in a fruitless bloody struggle in the tribal areas in blind obedience to American orders resulting in catastrophic harm to Pakistan national security.

The worst situation any army could possibly imagine is to be responsible for defending its borders even as it is entangled in an internal civil conflict

Pakistan’s collective memory has not yet forgotten the dire consequences of the civil war in East Pakistan and every thing that Pervez and his generals have done in Waziristan, Bajaur and Baluchistan they will not hesitate to repeat in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and any other place the Americans order them to strike.

Pervez is the one who has tried to change the combat doctrine of the Pakistani armed forces by repeatedly insisting that the real threat against Pakistan lies within and doesn’t come from outside.

Pervez: the enemy is not outside, the enemy is within. We will have to handle the inside enemy

That is to say he is urging the Pakistani armed forces to concentrate on fighting their own people and ignore the Indian threat.. And when the combat doctrine of any army is corrupted and its service becomes merely for the sake of post and salary this army will without a doubt flee the battle field at any real confrontation.

How can the Pakistani officer or soldier be convinced that he is protecting Islam when is has enabled the Americans to kill tens of thousands of Muslims in Afghanistan and helped them to remove the Islamic emirate in Kabul?

How can the Pakistani officer or soldier be convinced that he is protecting the honour of the Pakistani people when he is being ordered by his superiors to kill women and children inside his own country?

How can the Pakistan officer or soldier be convinced that he is safe guarding the dignity and high repute of Pakistan when he receives orders from his commanders to launch a new massacre with every visit of a senior American official?

This Pervez has dealt severe blows to the morale of the Pakistani army twice. The first time was when he ordered it to launch an immoral anti Islam war against its own people as mercenaries under the American flag and the second was when he exposed the army to repeated humiliating defeats at the hands of the brave Islam defending tribal fighters

4. Pervez is trying to sell Kashmir at any available price. He stated in March 2004 that he wants to conduct a national dialogue about possible solutions for Kashmir including local autonomy joint Indo-Pak administration and UN supervision!

He has strangled the Jihadi resistance to India. He has offered and is still offering repeated concessions in the Kashmir issue whereas India has not retreated a single inch from its obstinate stance. He is trying to mislead the Muslim Ummah in Pakistan by falsely claiming that the problem with India will be solved through confidence building measures in an attempt to end the struggle for the liberation of Kashmir the core issue between India and Pakistan.

And he is the one targeting the Arab mujahideen and their brothers from all over the Muslim world who are considered to be one of the most important keys to the liberation of Kashmir just as they played a crucial part in the liberation of Afghanistan before.

I wish to stress here the vital fact that the jihad to liberate Kashmir should first be liberated from the ISI because corrupt governments spoil jihad

These governments defer to the wishes of the superpowers and no jihad will succeed unless it is freed from the wishes of the enemies of Islam

5. Pervez has practically recognised Israel in an attempt to mentally prepare the Pakistani people for the recognition of a non Muslim state in Kashmir

6. Pervez has insulted and compromised Pakistan’s sovereignty by allowing the CIA and FBI to operate freely in Pakistan and arrest interrogate, torture, deport and detain any person whether Pakistani or not for as long as they like, thus turning the Pakistani army and security agencies into hunting dogs in the contemporary crusade.

Pervez: We are fighting first of all Al Qaeeda, lets take al Qaeda. We have arrested or eliminated almost 700 al Qaeeda leaders. Only Pakistan has done it. And lately also whoever has been killed or arrested I challenge who else, which other country has done this?

It is no secret that the Americans have exclusive control of many Guantanamo like detention centres on Pakistani soil

7. Pervez and his greedy gang have committed all the crimes because of which Pervez claimed he took power so he could save Pakistan from their evils

If you were to read his memoirs you would find no single sin of which he accused Benazir and Nawaz which he himself has not committed subsequently. And because Pervez is thirsty for money and a bribe seeker he’s always trying to convince the people of Pakistan to look out only for their own material interests regardless of any Islamic or moral consideration

Pervez: What do we want in Afghanistan? We want peace in Afghanistan. Why do we want this? I said before “First comes Pakistan”

What’s Pakistan’s interest? Pakistan has the greatest interest in it. When there will be peace in Afghanistan the economy of the central Asian republics that I explained before, their trade, their oil, their gas, all this will come here and go through Pakistan, go through Afghanistan and Pakistan

When there will be peace and development in Afghanistan, Pakistan’s foreign exchange will increase. Pakistan’s economy will uplift

This is exactly the same logic of drug traffickers, white slavery mafias, spies and traitors

Almighty Allah has said “Shaitan threatens you with poverty and enjoins you to be niggardly and Allah promises you forgiveness from Himself and Abundance and Allah is Ample giving, All Knowing

But you will see those in whose hearts is a disease hastening towards them saying: we fear lest a calamity should befall us but it may be that Allah will bring the victory or a punishment from Himself so that they shall be regretting on account of what they hid in their souls”

Now another ‘Pervez’ namely Pervez Ishfaq Kiyani has taken over the same duties that the old ‘Pervez’ used to perform for the US and accordingly we see him as an equally hostile enemy of Islam

Pervez: General Kiyani now takes over from me. He has taken over. I know General Kiyani since the last two decades. He has served under me. I know he is an officer of great professional acumen and quality and I know that he will lead the army as well if not better as I did. I have full faith and trust in him and I have no doubt that the army remains committed to what ever role it is playing in national building and in the protection of the nation.

In all of the aforementioned examples we shall be fools if we don’t recognise the American factor in the politics of Pakistan which is virtually ruled from the American Embassy.

And now and after all those services provided by Pervez and his greedy gang to the Americans, let us take a look at how the Americans view the Pakistani army and security agencies

TV Reporter: What did Armitage say to your Director of Intelligence right after Sept 11.

Pervez: The Director of Intelligence told me that he said 'be prepared to be bombed, to be prepared to go back to the stone ages'.

TV Reporter: Richard Armitage said that you should be prepared to be bombed back to the stone ages?

Pervez: Yes

TV Reporter: What was your reaction?

Pervez: Huh (chuckling) One has to react, one has to think and take action in the interests of the nation and that’s what I did

TV Reporter: Were you insulted?

Pervez: Yes, I thought it was a very rude remark

Let me remind my brothers and sisters of the cartoon which appeared in the American Press after the arrest of Brother Abu Faraj Al Libbi may Allah (swt) release him soon, showing an American soldier patting a hunting dog and asking him to bring Osama Bin Laden may Allah protect him.

The American may like his dog, play with it, feed it, smile at it and maybe even kiss it but after all is said and done it is still a Dog! Let me remind my brothers and sisters that the present army chief Pervez Kiyani was the senior hunter of Abu Faraj Al Libbi may Allah release him soon. That’s the American psychological perception of the Pakistani army and security agencies in spite of all the smiles and compliments

In contrast we have solid proof of American alignment with India in their advanced cooperation with it, particularly in the nuclear and high technology fields as well as in military training.

“The Parable of those who take guardians besides Allah is as a parable of the spider that makes for itself a house and most surely the frailest of the houses is the spider’s house, if only they knew”

“And whoever takes the Shaitan for a guardian rather than Allah he indeed shall suffer a manifest lost. He gives them promises and excites vain desires in them and the Shaitan does not promise them but to deceive them”

As regards the second question is any Pakistani serving in such an army or taking part with his government in the contemporary crusade which they call the war on terror a true and sincere Muslim or is he an enemy of Islam violating the very principles of the Qur’an and Sunnah

Almighty Allah says “O you who believe! Do not take the Jews and Christians for friends, they are friends of each other and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend then surely he is one of them, surely Allah does not guide the unjust people”

Imam Al Tarabi said in his tafsir commenting on this verse “Who ever supports and champions the Jews and Christians against the Muslims becomes a follower of their religion and faith because no one supports someone else unless he is pleased with him and his religion and if he is pleased with him and his religion then he has hated and become hostile to that which opposes him and his status becomes the same as his

Imam Al Jassas Al Hanafi commenting on the same verse said “the speech here is directed either to the Mushrikeen (Polytheists) or to the Muslims and that in the latter case it is a notice that you are a kaffir (infidel) like them because of your championing of them”

This is why I warn each and every officer and soldier in the Pakistani army and security forces of the grave consequences. Almighty Allah has prepared for those assisting the kafirs against the Muslims and each one of them particularly from the lower ranks should know that Pervez does not care about them at all and is throwing them into the hell of civil war carelessly and is prepared to sacrifice thousands of low ranking personnel in order to guarantee the continuous flow of American bribes.

I request each Muslim in Pakistan to remember the glorious history of their noble scholars who resisted fiercely any and all cooperation for the British Indian Army.

Sheikh ul Hind Maulana Mehmood ul Hassan said in his fatwa to the students of Aligarh University “you have no choice but to abandon supporting and championing Islam’s enemies whether in practice or in belief and the religious basis of this matter is undeniable and he wrote in his letter to the Jammat-Ulamah meeting of Amristar “the fiercest enemies of Islam and Muslims are the British so it is mandatory to stop supporting them.

His student Sayyed Hussain Ahmad Madni (May Allah be pleased with him) stood up in court to say “Joining the British Army helping another to join it or advising him to join and supporting the British Army or giving it loans for war are all haraam.

He also said “Mr. Lloyd George during the invasion of Bait-ul-Maqdas named this war a Crusade. Mr. Churchill called it a Crusade. Therefore I declare now in plain and clear words that any Muslim who champions Christianity not only commits a sin but also becomes a kaffir. He also stated that “the second form of killing a Muslim is when a person considers killing Muslims as permissible (Halaal) and does not feel or repent for this act. For example if there is a Muslim Army which says ‘Fighting is our job’ so even if Muslims come in front of us we will fight them, as if raising a sword against a Muslim is no sin; or they say “Our Masters have ordered us to fight Muslims and we are fed by their money so we should obey their orders as if there is nothing wrong in obeying someone’s orders to kill Muslims as long as he keeps feeding you thus in such a condition, it is the agreed upon verdict (ijma) of the entire Ummah that the person committing such an act is surely and verily a Kaffir and has committed the type of kuffar that expels him from the Ummah. His ruling according to the Law of Allah is the same as that of the Kuffar and Mushrikeen both in this world and the hereafter. No Muslim is allowed to consider such a person to be a Muslim or deserving of being dealt with in the manner in which we deal with other Muslims.

The third possible form of killing a Muslim is when a Muslim fights alongside Kuffar against other Muslims or aids them in war so that the Kuffar attains success and victory and when a war is waged between Muslims and non Muslims he sides with the kuffar. This form of the said crime embodies the greatest type of Kuffar and transgression and represents such an extreme condition of the death of a person’s belief and annihilation of his Islam that no worse form of infidelity and disbelief can possibly be imagined

All the sins, offences and impurities of the world and each and every kind of disobedience which a Muslim can commit in this world or think of committing are nothing when comparing to this crime. Any Muslim who commits this crime surely becomes a Kaffir and is the worst kind of kaffir. He has not only committed the sin of killing a Muslim, but has also aided and strengthened the enemies of the truth in their fight against Islam and there is no doubt that this is such an explicit and definite form of Kufr that it expels a person from the realm of Islam. When Islam in such a condition does not permit keeping merely a relationship of love and affection with the Non–Muslims, how then can someone’s faith and Islam remain intact after giving explicit support to the kuffar in their war against Islam and after directing his weapon towards Muslims.

My brothers and Sisters in Pakistan, don’t you notice how the words of Sheikh-ul-Hind Maulana Mehmood al Hassan and his student Sayyed Hussain Ahmad Madni (may Allah bless their souls) describe exactly the behavior of those who are aiding the Americans and British today in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Don’t you see how the Indian armies which were killing Muslims yesterday at the orders of the British are themselves the forces of Pervez which are today killing Muslims in Afghanistan and the tribal areas of Pakistan at the orders of the Americans.

Don’t Perez’s forces provide the crusaders with information, bases, airports and even detention and torture centres? Don’t they supply them with food and fuel to kill detain, torture and humiliate Muslims in Pakistan and Afghanistan?

Don’t you notice how when Sayyed Hussain Ahmad Madni quoted the statements of past British politicians about their crusade, he was quoting word for word Bush, when he declared his new crusade against Muslims?

Isn’t it clear that the Malta detention centre, in which Sheikh-ul-Hind and Sayyed Hussain Ahmad Madni were jailed is comparable to the Guantanamo camp?

Isn’t it clear that we are fighting a new battle in an old war? It is the same struggle against the same enemies. The facts are the same, only the names and faces have changed.

The king’s viceroy in Delhi has become the American ambassador in Islamabad. The British Indian army has become the American Pakistani Army, the prime minister in London has become the president in Washington and Sayyed Ahmad Shaheed and Shah Ismail Shaheed and their mujahideen are today the mujahideen fighting for the sake of Allah to expel the neo-crusaders from Afghanistan, Pakistan and the entire sub-continent. But the difference is that the Jihadi awakening of today is by the grace of Allah much stronger, wide spread and not limited to the sub-continent and the American crusader empire is facing by the grace of Almighty Allah humiliating defeats in Afghanistan and Iraq and now after this painful description of the degenerating situation in Pakistan the crucial question comes: what to do?

First before discussing the answer to this question, I wish to remind every Muslim of the consensus (ijma) of Muslim scholars that when a non Muslim enemy invades a Muslim country, it becomes the individual duty of every Muslim to rise up and resist the invaders by all available means and this duty extends to the other Muslims countries from the nearest to the farthest until the Muslim Ummah is able to expel the invaders from its lands. This is exactly the same fatwas issued by the scholars of Pakistan during the Russian invasion of Afghanistan.

So what’s the difference? The Russians have gone but the Americans have come to Pakistan and Afghanistan. So coming back to the answer of the crucial question of what to do?

Let me put the answer in a few short, straight forward points:

1. Create awareness. We should first be aware of the real nature of the conflict. We are facing a zio-crusader campaign aided by our corrupt rulers and executed by their hunting dogs; then this awareness must be spread to the whole nation. Although this is the duty of every Muslim in Pakistan it is particularly the duty of the Ullamah in Pakistan. They must explain the facts of the Qur’an in order to encourage the Muslims to resist the crusaders and their agents; and they should revive the glorious history of their ancestors; Shah Abd-ul-Aziz, Syed Ahmad Shaheed, Shah Ismail Shaheed, Shah Abd-ul-Hai and Sheikh-ul-Hind (may Allah be pleased with them all)

2. Don’t kill or help in killing Muslims, nor aid or support killers of Muslims

We have received a questionnaire from Mr. Mehmood-ul-Hassan and he has asked answers to his questions from our mufti in the light of Qur’an and Sunnah. As an answer of which the mufti of Dar-ul-ifta of Lal Masjid, Mufti Abdul Diyan issued this fatwa that is absolutely according to Qur’an and Sunnah and there is no sort of ambiguity in it what so ever.

It is the primary duty upon the ulema to guide Muslims according to the Qur’an and Sunnah, to convey them correct instructions, where and what extent the ruler shall be obeyed. Plain instructions are present regarding this subject where the Qur’an has commanded that obey Allah and his Messenger and those in authority… the commentators have clearly stated here that such obedience will only be observed in good “there shall be no obedience of the Created beings in the disobedience to the Creator and it is related in the Hadeeth that it is unlawful to obey any created being in the disobedience of the Creator… almost all the prominent Dar-ul-Ifta in the country the Jamiat-your-Rasheed in Karachi likewise the Dar-ul-Uloom Haqqania of Akora Khattak the Jamiah Ashrafia and Jamiah Farooqia and the Dar-ul-Ifta of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, thousands of Ulema of the country have approved this fatwa and the attestation with the signatures of hundreds of Muftis has reached us and is present with us. All of them have stated without any disagreement, they are 100% agreed upon the statement that it is against the Qur’an and Sunnah to shower bullets at Muslim brothers and harm them in order to please kuffar or under their pressure or to gain their pleasure this is unlawful

Every Soldier and officer should absolutely disobey any order to kill Muslims or aid their killers. I am also asking here anyone who has committed any of those sins to immediately repent and stop serving the devils of our age

3. Join and support the Mujahideen. It is the personal duty of every Muslim in Pakistan to perform jihad against the crusaders invading Afghanistan and Pakistan but if he is unable to do so, he must at the very least support and aid the Mujahideen

4. Examine yourselves. Are you really following and practicing Islam personally socially and politically? Or are you deviating from Islam one way or another? Are you really championing Islam or you are siding with the secular pro western anti Islam forces cooperating with America in its crusade against Islam, the so called war on terror?

I know that among you are those who sacrificed their jobs when Pervez decided to support America in its war against the Islamic emirate in October of 2001. And that among you are those who refused to kill their brothers in Waziristan, costing them their jobs but are you really ready to sacrifice everything in Allah’s path or are you wasting your time and efforts in the tiresome shows of the Pakistani political circus

Let there be no doubt in your minds that the dominant political forces at work in Pakistan today are competing to appease and please the modern day crusaders in the white house and are working to destabilize this nuclear capable nation under the aegis of America. So don’t allow the fruits of the victory achieved through the sacrifices of the Mujahideen fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq and the tribal belt of Pakistan to be hijacked by the politicians who sat passively while the girls and boys of Jamia Hafsa and the red mosque perished and burned.

These are the same politicians who follow the tenets of an alien Western democratic system and judiciary and exploit Islam to fulfill their greedy aims

This is why I address here everyone possessing a remnant of intelligence and conscience in the armed forces of Pakistan. Be aware that many among the Muslims continue to hold onto a glimmer of hope that among you are some decent and Allah fearing individuals who refuse to soil their hands with Muslim blood and who don’t agree with the direction Pakistan is being taken in and are prepared to take upon themselves to ensure that the reins of power in Pakistan either remain in the hands of Pervez and his supporters in the army nor in the hands of the present lot of politicians; but are taken over by leaders who believe in implementing the Law of Allah (swt) who believe in legislating and judging according to the laws of Allah (swt) who shun the western democratic system and judiciary; who refuse to be slaves of the Crusaders and Jews and who believe in the command of Allah (swt)

“And that you should judge between them by what Allah has revealed and no not follow their desires” and his statement

“And it behoves not a believing man and a believing woman that they should have any choice in their matter when Allah and His Apostle have decide a matter; and whoever disobeys Allah And his Apostle he surely strays off a manifest straying”

I must warn you however that if you fail to discharge your duty to Islam then Allah (swt) is in need of no one’s help and He the most high will send His sincere soldiers to rule this Ummah of Islam whether you like it or not!

“And most surely Our host alone shall be the victorious ones”

O you who believe! Whoever from among you turns back from his religion then Allah will bring a people. He shall love them and they shall love Him lowly before the believers, mighty against the unbelievers. They shall fight in Allah’s way and shall not fear the censure of any censurer. This is Allah’s grace. He gives it to whom he pleases and Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing

You may be asking yourselves, “What will happen to Pakistan if we support the Mujahideen and confront America?” But rest assured if you rise up against the Taghut then Allah (swt) will give you the power to overcome the might of the Great Taghut, America or He Himself may stop it.

Allah (swt) has said to his Prophet pbuh,

“Fight them in Allah’s way; this is not imposed on you except in relation to yourself and rouse the believers to ardor (passion, zeal) maybe Allah will restrain the fighting of those who disbelieve and Allah is strongest in prowess and strongest to give an exemplary punishment”

And I don’t have to remind you my brothers and sisters of the losses, suffering and casualties of the modern day Crusaders in Afghanistan and Iraq at the hands of the Mujahideen (those who rely on Allah alone) and reject the Hypocritical and subservient tactics of the Pakistani Politicians in the same way they reject the cowardly and greedy miscalculations of the Pakistani Military Junta. Neither freedom, nor justice, nor dignity, nor independence can ever be achieved without the full and proper implementation of Shariah and the expulsion of the neo-Crusaders, their agents and their influence from Pakistan to Afghanistan; otherwise we shall get nothing except the trifles that the prisoners get from their jailer

And here I wish to add a few words for the heroes of Pakistan be they well known or unknown; those who have sacrificed and are still sacrificing their lives their property, wealth , homes, posts, jobs and everything they could possibly sacrifice for the glory and victory of Islam. I want to assure thee heroes that their sacrifices are never neglected nor overlooked and I want to remind them of what Almighty Allah said to his prophets Moses and Haroon when they told their God that they were afraid of the excesses and tyranny of Pharaoh:

Both said: O our Lord surely we fear that he may hasten to do evil to us or that he may become inordinate. Almighty Allah assured them that they shouldn’t be afraid because He is with them listening and seeing

He said: Fear not, surely I am with you both, I do hear and see

So these brothers should have full confidence that during every moment of suffering they have passed through Almighty Allah was listening and seeing. He was with them at each and every moment of exhaustion, fear, stress, torture, deprivation, pain, injury and migration listening, seeing and counting for them their good deeds. So they should be sure that they by the grace of Allah (swt) are winning not losing. With their suffering and sacrifices they are pioneering the victory of Islam in Pakistan and following in the footsteps of the Prophets (peace and blessings be upon them all) and their followers (Allah be pleased with all of them)

Finally I request every Muslim in Pakistan to ask himself seriously: Does he want Pakistan to truly become Pakistan? Or is he going to stand by idly and passively until it becomes a part of Greater Hindustan?

And may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions in entirety.

Al-Qaeda video rounds on Iran

Al-Qaeda has released a new video accusing Iran of giving way to the US in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The new footage, released three days before the seventh anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, also attacked Lebanese, Pakistani and Afghan leaders.

Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaeda's deputy leader, and other senior al-Qaeda commanders, focussed on what they called the "Iranian-Crusade alliance" saying the Muslim Umma [nation] was being targetted.

In the one-hand-half-hour video, al-Zawahiri said that the Muslim Umma was facing a military, ideological and media crusade by the Iranian "coalition", which had given way to the US, by letting them invade Afghanistan and Iraq.

Al-Qaeda's deputy also said Hezbollah and its leaders did not gain victory in the war against Israel in 2006, saying that outcome had been beneficial to Israel.

"The most bizarre and astounding thing is that Hassan Nasrallah [Hezbollah's leader] celebrates a victory every year.

"What victory?" he said. "Retreating 30 miles backwards?" he said.

Kabul government 'weaker'

Al-Zawahiri also accused Lebanon's leaders of following in the footsteps of Washington and its "agent Arab regimes".

The video called for a continued jihad (struggle) to liberate Palestine and re-establish the Muslim Umma, and denounced the positions adopted by the Muslim and Arab states against the siege imposed on the Palestinians - namely the closure of Gaza Strip's border crossing points.

The tape said Afghanistan's government was getting weaker and frailer and that the former Pakistani president, Pervez Musharraf, had "swallowed the fruit of his betrayal" by resigning in August.

The video message said the jihad in Iraq was still up-and-running and showed interviews with an Iraqi scholar describing the country's Awakening Councils, which turned against al-Qaeda and joined sides with US-led and Iraqi troops, as "treacherous", and "doomed".

One al-Qaeda leader, Abu Yahia Al-Liby, also praised "victories" by the Islamic Courts Union in Somalia, where the network claimed the number of young fighters was surging.

Al-Qaeda has released a new video accusing Iran of giving way to the US in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The new footage, released three days before the seventh anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, also attacked Lebanese, Pakistani and Afghan leaders.

Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaeda's deputy leader, and other senior al-Qaeda commanders, focussed on what they called the "Iranian-Crusade alliance" saying the Muslim Umma [nation] was being targetted.

Report: Saudi Official Met Al-Zawahiri


TEHRAN, Sept 13--The secretary-general of the Saudi Supreme National Security Council has secretly visited al-Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri in a region near Afghan-Pakistani border, Fars news agency reported.

Fars quoted "Hijr" news website as citing "certain" sources in the Pakistani government as saying that Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz, former Saudi envoy to the US, met with al-Zawahiri near the Afghan border.

According to the report, the visit has been arranged in Waziristan tribal area by a number of Pakistani intelligence officers supporting the Taliban and al-Qaeda. The sources did not give further details.

It is widely believed that al-Zawahiri, Bin Laden and other al-Qaeda leaders are in that rugged mountainous region and enjoy the support of pro-Taliban Pakistani tribes.

According to the report, political analysts say that al-Zawahiri's recent statements in which he accused Iran of cooperating with US officials in fighting al-Qaeda have to do with the secret visit.

In a statement marking the anniversary of the Sept 11 attacks, al-Zawahiri accused Iran of collaborating with Washington in Afghanistan and Iraq to curb the terrorist network.

The report says anti-Iran allegations by al-Qaeda number two leaves "no doubts" that current actions by Zawahiri are in line with "orders and viewpoints by Bandar bin Sultan."

CAIRO, Egypt - Al-Qaida No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri has criticized President-elect Barack Obama, calling him a demeaning racial term implying that Obama is a black American who does the bidding of whites.

In an audio message which appeared on militant Web sites Wednesday, al-Zawahri said that Obama is "the direct opposite of honorable black Americans" like Malcolm X. He called Obama a "house negro."

He added that Obama's plan to shift troops to Afghanistan is doomed to failure, because Afghans will resist.

The audio plays over still pictures of al-Zawahri, Malcolm X praying, and Obama with Jewish leaders at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem.

'Criminal America'

The tape also criticizes Obama for his position on Israel, stating that this proves his "stance of hostility to Islam and Muslims".

Al-Zawahri also urged Muslims to continue attacks against "criminal America".

The 11 minute and 23 second message is the first public comment by an al-Qaida about Obama's electoral victory.

In the wake of the tape, a senior counterterrorism official told NBC News there is no intelligence to indicate any impending attack on the United States or on the president-elect.

The official said statements by security officials about "high danger" during the transition were purely an "analytic concern," based on previous al-Qaida involvement in the political process both in the United States and elsewhere.

From an intelligence standpoint, it’s interesting. The undisguised racism of the message (Zawahiri refers to Obama as a “house negro”) reveals a sloppy desperation on the part of al Qaeda. The organization used to be disciplined about their messages, playing on what they perceived as the sympathies of the American public. American member Adam Gadahn took to peppering Western bound Qaeda communiqués with liberal talking points in hopes of re-channeling domestic Bush-hatred. But insulting America’s widely-beloved President-elect for not being the right kind of black person isn’t going to get Zawahiri much support in the U.S., especially now, in the election’s afterglow. A wiser approach would have been to praise subtley America’s choice for change, and thereby play on a war-weary public to press for a less militaristic foreign policy. Think that’s crazy? A few months ago, all Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had to do to get Nancy Pelosi to see a diplomatic “opening” was go on TV and praise America’s “new behavior.” Western countries are cheap dates, as far as that kind of pandering is concerned.

Most importantly, this message solidifies something that the intelligence community has hinted at for a while: Ayman al-Zawahiri is now al Qaeda’s number one. He has more day-to-day involvement with the terrorist network than Osama bin Laden (who I personally suspect has been dead for some time), and his communication capacities are far greater, as well. Giving a message to the new American president is not a task that would be left to the number-two man. In fact, if Bin Laden is alive, delivering such a message should have constituted a full year’s work for the isolated figurehead.

Former Al-Qaeda Ideologue Exposes Al Zawahiri

Cairo, Asharq Al-Awsat- Dr. Fadl (AKA Sayyid Imam Al Sharif), former leader of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad group and former chief ideologue of the al-Qaeda movement reveals in his forthcoming book 'The Exposure' new details regarding the terrorists group's second-in-command, Ayman al zawahiri.

Dr. Fadl, who is currently serving a life sentence in prison in Egypt, has renounced terrorism. He criticized Al Qaeda and Al Zawahri in particular, in his previous book 'Rationalizing Jihad in Egypt and the World' which was written from prison, and was published in 2007. Before being imprisoned Dr. Fadl was one of the leading figures of Islamic fundamentalism, and his ideas have influenced Al Qaeda and countless others terrorist groups. His book 'The Master in Making Preparation (for Jihad)' is considered a global manifesto for Jihadist groups, and was used as a manual in Al Qaeda training camps.

In his forthcoming book, Dr. Fadl reiterates his criticism, and reveals details regarding his relationship with his former Islamic Jihad colleague, Dr. Ayman Al Zawahri. He reveals that when both men were in Sudan in the early 90s Al Zawahri, who by then had succeeded him to the leadership of Egyptian Islamic Jihad, was still sending orders to the group to perform operations in Egypt. Dr. Fadl writes "When I accused him of working for the Sudanese intelligence in Sudan in 1993, I heard these words from his own lips. He said to me that 'he is committed by the Sudanese to carrying out 10 operations in Egypt, and that he received one hundred thousand dollars for this purpose'. These were his words to me, and if he denies them then I will curse him again, for I swear to God that Zawahri told me these words in person, and if you disbelieve me, then may God punish the one of us who is lying'.

As for his experience in Afghanistan, Dr. Fadl writes 'I discovered that the attention of the Arabs taking part in this Jihad was focused on military matters, while neglecting Islamic Shariaa law. I also noticed that they were fervent and sentimental, but not observant of Islamic doctrine.

The Deputy leader of Al Qaeda, Dr. Ayman Al Zawahri has responded to Dr. Fadl's criticisms in his new book the 'Treatise Exonerating the Nation of the Pen and the Sword from the Blemish of Weakness and Fatigue'. 'The Exoneration' as it is more commonly known, is a polemic defense by Al Zawahri against his former mentor's disparagement. The book, which was published by Al Qaeda's media wing 'Al Sahab', is 200 pages long and took 4 months to write. In it Al Zawahri writes that 'Dr. Fadl's initiative is an example of what the US intelligence agency wants' and that not only was 'Rationalizing Jihad' written under duress, and incarceration, but also under the direct 'supervision, guidance, and funding of the Crusader/Zionist campaign'.

Dr Fadl was born in Banu Suwayf in southern Egypt in 1950.He graduated with honors from Cairo University's College of Medicine in 1970and worked as a resident surgeon at Al-Qasr al-Ayni's Medical College. He obtained his master's degree with high honors and became director of the Kuwaiti Crescent Hospital in Peshawar. In the wake of the separatist war in Yemen he worked as a volunteer physician at Yemen's Al-Thawrah Hospital and then worked in Dar al-Shifa Hospital in the city of Ibb south of Sanaa until hewas finally arrested in 2003. Meanwhile he had married a Palestinian woman and had four children. He later married a Yemeni woman and had a daughter with her who is now four years old.

He fled Egypt after Al-Sadat's assassination in 1981 when he was named as a suspect in the government's major case against Al-Jihad Organization. He traveled to Pakistan to help treat the wounded and was then appointed director of the Kuwaiti Crescent Hospital in Peshawar. He left Pakistan in the wake of the famous campaign of arrests against the Arabs in Peshawar in 1993. He traveled to Sudan, but sensing that the Islamists were being harassed there, he left for Yemen. Yemen extradited him to Egypt in February 2004, putting him and five others who had death sentences passed against them in absentia on board a private aircraft that took off from the freight section at Sanaa Airport.

In April 1999 an Egyptian military tribunal sentenced him to life imprisonment in connection with the returnees from Albania case even though he had never visited Albania.

Rusty's $.02: It's a rumor, yes. Our friends over at Terror Free Somalia got the rumor from Waaga's Club here. I'll post the entire thing below, but it's in Somali. I can't find anything on Shabelle about it in English.

I have to say, I find it very difficult to believe Zawahiri is actually in Somalia.

Having said that, I've long speculated -- and this goes back years -- that Osama bin Laden is in Somalia. But, to be honest, I always knew that was a longshot. This? An even longer shot.

Zawahiri is much more involved in the day to day operations of al Qaeda than bin Laden -- or so intel reports indicate. I can't imagine he'd take the risk. But then again, maybe he believes his own press and the myth of invulnerability that has grown up around him?

But still, I've already seen Shabaab videos showing fighters who are clearly Arab. Intel sources also say that as long as three years ago al Qaeda fighters were known to help in the training of Islamist insurgents. Today that number is probably far greater.

Especially given last year's pledging of the top Shabaab leadership to Osama bin Laden and recent reports that Shabaab is likely to officially declare itself part of the al Qaeda umbrella. I would find it incredibly naive to think that at least some al Qaeda leaders weren't in Somalia. But the top leader? I dunno.

Jane tells me that there were also rumors floating around that Zawahiri was in Yemen. I expect she'll post an update on that.

Keep an eye on it, though. Sometimes these things turn out to be based on some grain of truth. And if Z-man does turn up in Somalia then all the better since our base in Djibouti is perfectly capable of launching Predator strikes in Somalia. With the added bonus that there's no recognized government around to file diplomatic protests about violations of sovereignty.

Update by Jane: Given the recent deal making between the government of Yemen and al-Qaeda, the prospect of Zawahiri visiting nearby Somalia is not as far fetched as it may initially seem. Yemen is the primary supplier of weapons to Somalia (in violation of the UN arms embargo); weapons are shipped from Yemen across the narrow Bab al Mendab Strait between the two countries and the same boats bring Somali refugees to Yemen on the return trip.

After the September attack on the US embassy in Yemen, the US intercepted a communication between Ayman Zawahiri and the Iranian al Quds force leadership that referenced a deal between Yemeni President Saleh and Zawahiri. The deal was Zawahiri would send more fighters to Saleh to use in the northern Sa'ada war (against the Zaidi Shiite rebels) and in return Saleh would release imprisoned al-Qaeda operatives.

In a second deal in January, Saleh met with the contingent of Yemeni old generation co-opted al Qaeda under the leadership of Tariq al Fahdli and made a deal to use them to undermine the southern separatist movement in exchange for the release of prisoners. Saleh also gave the jihaddists funds and a free hand in the southern province of Abyan. New jihaddist training camps were also established. Then President Saleh released 102 jihaddists, of which about a third were actual al-Qaeda, there rest were local militants, thereby upholding his end of both deals.

Current news reports from Yemen indicate hundreds of jihaddists are amassing in the north in Sa'ada, Yemenis and non-Yemenis including Arabs and non-Arabs. The influx of foreign jihaddists to Sa'ada as well as the structure, training and hierarchy being imposed on them, indicates this possibly is an outcome of the communication between President Saleh and Ayman Zawahiri. The gathering of foreign jihaddists in northern Yemen could be the result of simultaneous decisions by hundreds of random zealots, but it seems unlikely in the con**** of the intercept and subsequent events.

The Yemeni government loosing jihaddists loose on the rebels "supporters", a term that neo-Salafi fanatics may extend to the entire civilian population, is a troubling scenario. However, if and when Zawahiri's jihaddists fight in Sa'ada, in all likelihood that blood will only be the glitter on the surface of their multi-faceted activities. For the US to support an ally engaged in a state sponsored jihad, and that's not a stretch of linguistics, is morally repugnant. If that jihad has the material support of al Qaeda Central, its unconscionable.

Pakistani intelligence source reports al-Zawahiri's location

Ayman al-Zawahiri, al Qaeda's No. 2 leader, the most wanted terrorist after Osama bin Laden, with a $25 million bounty on his head, is holed up near Quetta, Pakistan, according to a highly placed Pakistani intelligence source.

The Egyptian-born radical is a master of disguise, a meticulous planner and the deadliest of terrorists. Yet Pakistani intelligence sources say he roams openly and with impunity in the border regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan. While Predators continue to strike at a variety of key terror targets in that area, our source tells us that the CIA and other intelligence agencies cannot get al-Zawahiri, though they usually know for the most part where he is.

Al-Zawahiri's recent movements can be tracked with some specificity. He was positively identified in the North Waziristan Agency of Pakistan in June 2008, and the locations pinpointed where he conducted high-level meetings.

Subsequent U.S. drone attacks forced him to move to South Waziristan Agency in August 2008. Thereafter he moved south to Baluchistan and crossed into Afghanistan from the border city of Zhob. He returned to the Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA) sometime in December or January. A well-placed source in Pakistan's intelligence service tells me that he may have relocated recently to somewhere outside of Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan.

Al-Zawahiri hides in plain sight. He has given up the trappings of a high-value target, has no large entourage and dresses in the manner of the people in the areas in which he resides. He moves his wives frequently to preclude any identification by that means.

He does not trust locals and is protected by a security force of trusted Egyptians. However, quite a few old veterans of the conflict in Afghanistan recognize him as he moves about the area.

Pakistani intelligence agencies have shared with the CIA their knowledge of al-Zawahiri's location in the Quetta suburbs.

But the No. 2 most wanted man in the world is still roaming free.

In a message called "Tyrants of Egypt and America's agents welcome Obama" that was posted on Islamist Web sites, al-Zawahiri once again lashed out at the United States. Obama's message to the Muslim world, he said, has already been delivered with his support for "Zionist aggression."

"The White House declared that Obama will send a message from Egypt to the Islamic world but they forget that his messages were already received when he visited the Western Wall and wore the Jewish yarmulke and when he prayed their prayers," al-Zawahiri said in the 10-minute audio message.

Al-Zawahiri said Obama had already made himself an enemy of Muslims by sending more soldiers to Afghanistan, ordering bombings in the tribal areas of Pakistan and administering a "bloody campaign against Muslims" in Pakistan's Swat Valley.

He said Obama's message came through when "his administration continued to reject the appliance of the Geneva Conventions regarding Muslim prisoners in the crusade war against Islam that they call the war on terror."

"His bloody messages were received and they are still coming and they will not be obstructed either by the public relations campaigns, the shenanigan visits, or the articulate words," al-Zawahiri said.

The Mujahid Sheikh / Ayman Al-Zawahiri may Allah protect him

In the name of Allah. All praise be to Allah and prayers and peace be upon the

Messenger of Allah and his family and Companions and those allied to him.

O, my Muslim brothers everywhere:

Peace be upon you, and the Mercy of Allah, and His blessings. And then:

An American court has issued for the sister Aafia Siddiqui an 80-year prison

sentence. And in commentary on this sentence I have two messages: One to

America, and the second to the Muslim Ummah in Pakistan.

As for my message to America, I say to it: Judge, for you are putting judgment upon

yourselves. And be unjust, for you are being unjust with yourselves. And attack, for

you are only attacking yourselves. For - by the Lord of the heavens and earth - we

will fight you until the Day of Judgment or until you stop your crimes!

So imprison whomever you wish, and kill whomever you wish, and bomb whomever

you wish, and be as domineering as you wish, for the Ummah of Islam is behind

you: bombing for bombing, and killing for killing, and destruction for destruction,

and attacking equally.

"And fight in the Way of Allah those who fight you, but transgress not

the limits. Truly, Allah likes not the transgressors. And kill them

wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they have

turned you out. And Fitnah is worse than killing. And fight not with

them at Al-Masjid-Al-Haram, unless they (first) fight you there. But if

they attack you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the

disbelievers. But if they cease, then Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most

Merciful. And fight them until there is no more Fitnah and worship is

for Allah (Alone). But if they cease, let there be no transgression except

against the oppressors" [Al-Baqarah: 190-193]

As for my message to the Muslim Ummah in Pakistan, I say to it a few words, for the

time is now the time for action: Your government and the leaders of your army have

made you a people without dignity, with no sanctity and no pride, indeed with no

value.

The Americans and their Crusader allies invade your country and kill your people

and destroy your villages and imprison your women, so can there be any more

humiliation above this, and can there be any greater insult?

O, free people of Pakistan and its honorable people and the people of honesty and

passion and protection, O soldiers of Islam in it: The path is apparent and the road

is clear, so whoever wishes to liberate Aafia Siddiqui and take revenge against those

who attacked her, and every other Muslim woman should follow the Mujahideen

and aid them and join them, for there is no pride except through Jihad and no

dignity except through it.

"Let those (Believers) who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter

fight in the Cause of Allah, and whoso fights in the Cause of Allah, and

is killed or gets victory, We shall bestow on him a great reward. And

what is wrong with you that you fight not in the Cause of Allah, and for

those weak, ill-treated and oppressed among men, women, ...among

men, women, and children, whose cry is: "Our Lord! Rescue us from

this town whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from You one

who will protect, and raise for us from You one who will help." Those

who believe, fight in the Cause of Allah, and those who disbelieve, fight

in the cause of Idols. So fight you against the friends of Shaitan. Ever

feeble indeed is the plot of Shaitan" [An-Nisa: 74-76]

And this is enough for those who have shame and passion in their hearts, and there

is no good in words without actions.

And our final prayers are praise be to Allah, and prayers be upon our master

Muhammad and his family and Companions.

Peace be upon you and the Mercy of Allah and His blessings.
